Planning on starting a blog...any recommendations?

I'm going to be planning a blog as a companion blog to my website. I already intend to use my own writing and content so content is not an issue. What would you say is the best site to do a blog? Search engine wise and dofollow wise and not-too-many-ads-all-over-the-pages wise?

    Thanks for any advice!

Oh and it has to be free. :)

I think you can use all-in-one SEO pack to make it SEO friendly.
Of course if you use WP for your blog.
You can try many plug-ins for WP if you want. They have lot of good pug-ins.
You can do blog commenting to get backlink. No problem if it was no follow, just do it to get some backlinks.
It will be good if you trade some link with your friends so you can get some PR

    Thanks guys :)

Yup I'm going to use it as a companion blog for my site, which is a game forum--updating stuff on the forum and also posting up my own articles detailing my experiences in the field and tips for other roleplayers. Basically use it as a promotion/companion site/resource site all in one blog.

I was informed that WP is nofollow and that was my only reason I decided to come here for some advice first before diving in.

WP is by default no-follow, but there are plugins to make it do-follow.

I agree with most of the answers, i would go for wordpress. Good luck with your new coming blog :D

How about finding out who is already reading your blog by hosting an interactive quiz? Have a look at formsonthefly.co.uk for really simple software.

You can start blogging with WP. I think it's the best blog platform and there are so many great plugins you can use for your blog

Wordpress is far and away the best blogging platform, but it needs to be set up on your own domain and hosting. It is not therefore free for anyone just starting out, but it sounds as though you have already got a site that you just want to add a blog to. In that case, Wordpress will be free. (If you need a totally free solution, Blogger is best, but don't use it if you've already got a site and hosting because Wordpress will be free).

It is easy to set up if you know how to create an SQL database. If not, there are a lot of tutorials online which can show you.

There is at least one plug-in which can make Wordpress do-follow. I use it on my own sites.

The best way to start blogging is to start with the niche you like or know the most since you have many ideas to write contents.
