Question for seos who take on other peoples projects... When you take on a new project how do you start to tackle it? Do you have a specific plan of action? Do you just go about doing the work instinctivly? Or do things a bit randomly? Be interesting to know, especially if anyone has a plan of attack that works well for them everytime.
I am an e-commerce consultant so I look at range of things starting with the business model. Too many people launch stuff by the seat of their pants. That said, it helps to obviously start with the keyword research, both main and long tail. This helps determine where the traffic is and how to actually capture it. Part of keyword research also deals with looking at various demographic and trend related considerations and what the competitors are doing as well of course. After a while it is all largely instinctual but there is always some preparation involved. Hope that helps, Nigel
Start by thoroughly auditng the sites you going to be working on - technical build, navigation, content, keyword analysis, backlinks, competitors - then you know what needs to be done. Make a plan based on priority i.e try and fix the issues that are causing the most problems/underperformance first.
You'll have to do some KW analysis first. Make sure the title tags, headings, and sub-headings have your KWs in them. Look at the pics - do they have alt tags that have KWs in them? What about the pages? Do they interlink with each other? Also, make sure they have a sitemap and no broken links. Make sure the bots can crawl the site structure with ease. Look at your competitors. What KWs are they using within the niche(s)? Are they getting backlinks from many sites that are relevant that possibly have a high PR? Are the links DoFollow? ...and this is the beginning.
Firstly I look at what traffic they are getting and from where, then check the keywords what they rank for, record how they rank (including date), then try and get the site to rank better for all those keywords, then I start getting the site ranking for other keywords that they were previously not listed for.
This is all excellent and very helpful info. I have a bit of OCD and if I think I have missed something it drives me MAD!
