    Recently I have been using No Hands Pinger ( http://nohandspinger.com ) because it runs on your machine, is multi-threaded and free. A good thing is that you can paste in a list of pages and have it ping them all really quickly without having to rely on a web service, I found a lot to be down or buggy when I tried using them
