Picking niche based on google competition - Q?

    Hi all,

I'm wondering, how long do you analyze google results before you make a decision on picking your niche? The reason I ask is because I picked a couple of niches which had decent competition (<500K). In the past month though, the numbers kept jumping higher and higher, it's now in the millions! One keyword which was 500K is now 2.3 million. Another which was 800K is now at 15.4 Million. The numbers are now huge, it feels like I wasted my time and i'm pondering if I should continue wasting my time with these sites with the disgusting amount of competiting sites which just came up in the past month.

Has anyone else noticed similar results for their niches and keywords with google?

    Thanls

Pick a niche that you know about, don’t base your choice on search results.

    Thanks Brian

We'll, that's an obvious once :) I do know about all the sites I build...i'm more concerned about wasting tons of times on specific ones that don't generate traffic due to the millions of other sites on google..

Don't base competitiveness on the number of search results. That is a poor indicator of competitiveness. That just tells you how many pages have those keywords in their page or links. The top 10 - 20 are your only real competition. Closely examine each of those websites to see if you can match what they have done for marketing. The SEO for Firefox addon helps a lot with this. It displays a lot of useful info right below each Google search result.

Google is known to vary it's competiting pages. Use it only as a guide. If you test over a certain amount of days you will see the number fluctuate.

There is potential to make money in every single niche still... Even web-hosting as nicheQ has shown...
