So far the modifications I got are working fine - not a single spam submission in last 5 days - keeping a close watch - for any to sneak in.

Deleting entries is not the solution I was looking for, and don't recommend to anyone - I think bots shouldn't be able to submit at all - as my fix currently does. This has not stopped genuine submissions to my directory at all.

    Thx,
    Shreya

How are spammers suppose to submit if they don't know what your site is.

You see, I invite, and even dare spammers to TRY and spam
    www.authoritydirectory.com/submit.php
    or
    www.dirjournal.com/submit.php
    or
    www.directorymix.com/submit.php

    they CANT get in PERIOD!

Anyone who can get in I will personally pay them $100!

Talk is cheap, action is proof.

Well Rob - it has been a day and so far you don't owe anyone that $100 from what I can see.

Hey, I was just thinking that if any do get in I should get $100 too. ;)

this is something phpLD should address, .... and come out with a better way!

i really had to dig deep inside my innovative side to come up with a solution,
3 months on ... no captcha,... and no remote submissions,...:D

right now am working to do away with the "error_log" file! ... which goes in Mbs every few days!

(solution: not to be made public, thats Robs domain ;) )

PHPLD is quite easy to do submission by using any auto or semi auto submission softwares cause -

    1. they made their submit page in like that all the form class name, text box name, captcha etc. can be identify and can be put variables without opening the actual page in IE .And so lots of software engineers are already made tons of semi and auto submission softwares.
    2. Since the submission page is one, so submission software can complete the submission procedure without facing any problem.
    3. Full Automate submission software can be use at only those websites or directories where have no drop-down. Lots of search engines are asking for only site url and email, so those search engines or directories are always get lots of spam submissions.

To prevent automate submission, always retrieve the categories by user browsing system. The user will need to select the categories first by browsing the categories than the submission link will display at the end of the proper selected categories. The user will not able to select the categories at the submission page if he/she enter directly. See here ....

    OR

Complete the submission procedure at least in two or three form actions. Automate submission softwares are not able to do user action in dynamic environment. So this tics also help from automate submission. See here

But if someone want to do spam, no one can prevent them until you not use cookies to identify the PC. I have heard that lots of webmasters are trying to block spammers by putting the specific IP on the log file, but it does't work if the spammer IP is dynamic cause dynamic IP (DHCP) always provides different IPs to their clients in specific region.

Phpld should really think about adding some sort of feature , like akismet did for the bloggers, when it comes about spam. It can create a large database, where phpld directory owners can flag a spam site by his url, and when several directory owners do that, that site is blacklisted, and when it's owner, or submitter place it again, goes to a special created "spam sites" category in your PHPld admin.

Anyway, i think one simple way to fight spam in phpld dirs, and still keeping your directory free... is to ask uers registering for a free account, and then submit their sites.
The auto-submitters softwares can't do that... but also... the bad thing is that will annoy simple legitimate uers, who need to loose their time submitting to a single directory.

Maybe the "confirm your submission by email" will reduce also spam a little bit (as I saw many of them use fake email addresses) ... but I don't know if phpld have a mod for this.

    make your own rules !!
and clean them via phpmyadmin !!
    Thats what i do !!
I don't care about the mail to spammers !! just delete them from db and then sit for manual approval !!

While it may seem like a good feature(and it could be to some extent), it is one that will severely hinder submissions greatly due to the fact that quite a lot of submissions that come in are submissions from SEO companies.

I can truly seem some extremely serious broken business due to the fact that these firms submit the site and then have to confirm the email, and if they do NOT confirm the email, and although it is a legitimate submission, they won't see their listing in there for their client. This is turn will make them have to bother using valuable time and extra effort to contact the directory owner(s) to ask why and where is their listing and possibly even have them run a charge-back... hence they will not be returning due to the hassle.
