Hiya, I would like to know what do you do to prevent spam submissions to your phpld directories. Despite having captcha on - I still get huge amount of spam submissions everyday. Can someone suggest a solution to this problem. What do you do to avoid it? Any input / help would be appreciated. Thx SN
Captcha is easily bypassed. You'll need to make your own feature or pay a freelancer to come up with a better solution.
Try charging $0.01 per submission - that way it's ALMOST free, but submitters will need to be a little more serious about the site to go through the process of making the payment.
I wait and they give up, mine are paid but that wont stop them, im currently hit with russian spam, cant block ip's because its different ip's. Eventually they just quit, then another comes along, i just delete, i dont even find it much of a problem either, just part and parcel of having a website and email address.
Charged submission doesn't help @mma_freeroll - spam submission is from bots - not humans and they would still use your precious server resources. Would anyone have a clue how much would it cost to 'hire a freelancer' and any references that have helped you in the past for fixing similar issues? Thx Shreya
Captcha won't stop it, even requiring payment won't stop it because they just skip payment. Even so, I don't worry about spam anymore because absolutely NONE gets through. I no longer have to look at any of it. Sweet serenity...
I find this rather curious since so many rave about and recommend the PHPLD script but it sounds like it can’t keep out basic spam without modification.
You're right, it can't. It's one of the reasons I chose phplynx when I made one of my niche directories. I wonder how other scripts handle spam.
You can delete them all at once through phpmyadmin too. @mikey - Is there 100% no SPAM in phplynx and other directory softwares DON.
If you don’t have an unsecure script and you set up the paypal API you never get nuisanced by spam or non-payment submissions. It can make managing a directory much easier.
Hi Stoner, Could you suggest those scripts, are they available for free - or do I have to invest in them? With folks reluctant to buy links on directories (as I have heard - thanks to google penalizing such link building) - do you reckon it would give me any profit at any stage? I intend to make a general directory - not yet smart enough to move to the niche segment. By the way - have fixed spam submissions for good. Sat down to analyze what are common traits used by bots - and posted a no entry code for them. No more spam submission for last 12 hours - it seems to work fine with phpld 2.1.x Thx Shreya
It takes cutomized code to do the job as the base phpld will let a lot of spam through. an0n coded it. What I use, I have had it in place for some time now and it prevents any and all spam 100% - nothing gets through. It does not matter whether a bot submitted it or human.
Mikey, are you referring to jtg? If so, you do know that the submit has issues with it, right? Also, just so you know, there are design probs too. Just thought I'd let you know.
I have tried multiple methods to get rid of SPAM on my directories, including changing my captcha to a math question. Unfortunately spammers have a lot of resources and it's not easy to build a spam-free system. Recently I focused my attention to mods that allow me to identify and remove SPAM submissions.
Hello... Just upgrade to the newest phpld script and ban domains and delete ALL when they submit them. laterz malcolm
