Well, in my honest opinion it's definately worth it.

I have had nothing but fun in trying to be as creative as possible with my directory (version 3.03).

While my site isn't complete just yet, I do have it open for browsing while I update and add new things 'on the fly'. You'll know when i'm in there if you see any errors (due on my own acount) as the script itself runs seemlessly flawless for me.

You can check it out if you'd like. http://www.activeweblinks.com/

    It's phpLD v3.03 with Newstopica v2.1 integrated.

(sorry for the inability to direct link. I am new here, and don't have enough posts just yet, so you'll have to copy and paste. :))

Praised your design in phpld forums and will do so here too.Excellent anon.:)
Now there was some talk over at phpld forum about integrating phpld, newstopica and article cms.

    Now that would be something!

Well, I have 2 of the 3 working right now hahaha (phpld + news topica)
I've yet to experiment with article script just yet.

I've only been at this for about a month now. So it's all relatively new to me.
I do have another domain that is extreeeemly well structured. I have been pushing phpld to its limits and beyond with my own code modifications.

my fsbo directory boasted over 2.5million in categorical structure. The structure was something else to get setup.

    a good ex:
    Agents->U.S-->california-->orangy county-->orange
    Agents->all states-->specific stat-->all counties of state-->all cities in county

now do that for every single Parent. :eek:ogle:

Thanks a lot for the praise. It really helps motivate me and definately helps ease the non-reciprocol issue i seem to be facing with all of these submissions ;)

to converta running phpld2 site to phpld3 wouldn't be a wise idea, though some people have already done it. But if a directory is making money and after changing it to phpld3 if it's doesn't function properly then that directory will be in soup.

For new directories phpld3 is great.

Why would you expect that upgrading to phpld 3.x would not function properly? Have you heard of anyone to whom that has happened?

The upgrade to me was pretty much transparent. Barely a burp.

Which directory did you upgrade minstrel?

I would imagine it's just a matter of overwriting a few files on the server and repeating the installation process to reconfigure the database?

Well i just jumped into this directory thing as one of my domain (hmm actually 2 more are lying idle) was lying idle. So i decided to check out what this directory hype is all about. Well few days it took me to add categories and stuff and than i got bored seeing the default theme all the time so ended up learning and making custom templates, i could link to them if you like and if its allowed here.

But i think vr 2 is kinda slow and regarding features i think all i care about right now is that people can submit their sites :). And i wonder if its just me or there is a vc bug in version 2?

What specific things are you experiencing?

Epic Directory is powered using version 2, and I haven't experienced any issues.

My only gripe is with approving submissions. Everytime I approve a submission, it takes me back to the blank menu screen and you have to select the Appove Links tab again to get back to the main links screen. Gets very tedious after a little while :D

dcristo: check your firewall settings - they may be blocking "referer" - of so, fix that and the problem should be solved - if not upgrade to version 3.

As for the directory, it was http://directory.psychlinks.ca that I upgraded.

Have yet to figure that one out.
Approve a link and the screen is blank, then having to click back on the approve links.
One directory of mine does that all the time.
    Couple more, not at all!
It only happens when you go to the edit screen, not the main approve links page.
Waiting to see how ver 3 builds up.
Still deciding on the 25 bucks as an upgrade to one of my directories, or to do a new directory.
25 bucks is cheap for the script, but buying it for each directory is a bummer when you have a few.

Interesting you say that minstrel, thanks. On my folks computer I have no issues (which hasn't got a firewall) however on my work laptop with Norton Internet Security installed, it happens all the time. I really hope that's the problem it's hell annoying and very innefficient.

    dcristo,

I have seen the problem you are experiencing from other users. Sadly, it is an indiviual user/install problem, and not something that happens with every install. Some have reported that disabling firewalls from startup have solved it, so it seems to be an issue there. I dont know of nay known fixes for it, as it seems to be user dependant.

Norton Personal Firewall was the problem for me.

    1. Open the Firewall. Privacy Control | Configure | Custom Level | Browser pribacy => uncheck.

    2. Norton Personal Firewall | Options | Web Content | Global settings:

    Select:

Information about your browser = Permit
Information about visited sites = Permit

Norton tends to opt for overkill in its default settings, IMO.

Read the thread. It's not a phpLD issue. It's a firewall issue.

Visual Confirmation always had problems in version 2.x, although there were some fixes posted that seemed to do the trick for some people. As far as I know, the issue is resolved in version 3.

For me, ,It quite a good directory script. My current lives site using v2 and seems great. I bought v3 but never used it yet coz their bugs in some major release so I still wait for 3.0.4 to see what have they done to "terminate" bugs.

    The Pros I found is
    1. Worth for the money, $25 + $10 for support with many useful mods seems worth every cents you paid.
    2. Search engine friendly.

    The cons. I found is

    1. Hard to upgrade from previous version, with or without doing mods.
    2. Average support, some question they cannot answer they just leave as it to make it drill down in deeper.
    3. Some buggy in major features like mod_rewrite, search link in admin.
