When is paid better than free? In my experience programmers who have people paying for their work tend to feel much more of an obligation to fix new bugs and concerns but maybe that's not been your experience.

I use VB because of the security, support and updates, bugs, features, and the database. My programmer has felt there are many things that could have been done better but agrees it's the best option out there for us.

As far as comparing the largest boards, it's like saying one brand of car is faster than another brand of car while comparing two tubbed out and stripped vehicles that barely resemble what they were from the factory. Of course if you're planning on stripping down and rebuilding a program to what you want it to be you'd prefer to not pay for the program in the first place and not care about extra features.

With that said, I stick by VB being the best option for us but maybe not everyone. With 2.5 million posts and ~130K registered members, I've been very pleased with VB.

As far as the future of VB, they were recently acquired and though some may not agree, I believe it to be a very good thing:

Comparing Board softwares with cars is not option. Support your reply with relative things.... If that's how you compare things than I can compare Vb Team with my milkman. My Milkman is better coz he's regular with quality milk and never asks me how do I use his milk. And the best part I dont need a license for taking Milk from him at all. Now that's a nonsense like you made above.....:D

    Here's a thread with sense:

Read the topic completely and then answer. I know more than enough forums with phpbb. They are better and no problem with them at all. You can modify phpbb anyway. for more points read the above post. ;)

Another who's best thread? vBulletin is the best, with the best features, simple as that. If it wasn't would people still spend money on vB?

Holy PHPBB Fanboi. I was being nice and saying phpbb may be best for some but VB was best for me. I have direct experience with owning a major forum and trying multiple types of software.

If you don't understand the car thing maybe you didn't read it clearly. My point was both phpbb and VB on many major boards are so stripped of their original code and rebuilt it's like trying to say a mustang is faster than a corvette when they've been so modified the only thing stock on them is their steering wheel. They no longer reflect their original build. Our board is even getting there. I realize you want to include boards that barely use any structure of the original program in your comparison but that's not what the poll states.

We did a lot of test and research with database queries, compression and we were happy with the over all set up of VB for our needs and it's proven to be great.

Another thing at the time was the fact that I knew personally of board owners that were hacked with default installs of phpbb and not just one, I'm talkin 5-6 just off the top of my head. This was years back so maybe they've become a much more secure software out of the box, but that couldn't help but leave a bad feeling about it for me.

Just as this very board your posting on (DP) has well over 2K people online my board is also well over 2K online right now also and neither one appears to be troubled by it. Maybe phpbb sites run with that was well with no problems which goes to show neither one of them suck.

So once again I say VB from our experience and testing is our best choice and if Yfcadmin or anyone else feels phpbb is best for their own needs I don't doubt them.

You can take my experience and info and leave it at that or you can argue "VB gets hacked too" "cars are not like boards" and "buying software when you can get better software free is stupid"... but it's just arguing circles. I've yet to read any valid point AGAINST VB other than "it costs money". They're both good, just let it go lol.

    PHPBB > God.

I've used it since 2002 and I have had no problems, along with the fact that PHPBB3 is a very large improvement over 2. However support for both versions will last a very long time, so no older versions actually get dropped fro quite some time. Also, people keep saying its easy to spam, or hack, or blah de blee blah. Know what? It is also easy to mod.

    Know what else?

I can do whatever I want with it, as long as I don't sell it.

And as an update - RC5 is more stable, faster slightly, and more error free than RC4. They made some great improvements and streamlining, making it by far superior to everything else I have used and seen.

Updating? That was the easiest part. So simple and easy I dare say it was quite fun.

I actually made the switch from phpbb to VB. It was a pretty rough switch since I had phpBB totally modded out, but after the initial break-in period, my forum members and I LOVE the vb system. So much more you can do with it!

most of the time thes two came forward, but did you know there are many other good forumscripts to find on the internet, few years ago i came by usebb.net, i also know smf (simplemachineforums.com i think).

But if you need fast support for your forum vBulletin will be your thing!

...Not really? Phpbb.com has a much smoother layout and documentation is easy. First thing I see at Vb is one big advertisement for a bunch of stuff you can already get for free - and is openly developed.

Well, I answered vBulletin considering I own a license, and phpBB was made based of it.

Actually you're wrong. Both phpBB and vBulletin were initially released in 2000, and both were heavily influenced by UBB. vBulletin development started in February of 2000 and phpBB started in June of 2000.

I personally think phpBB 3 is the superior forum system at the moment. Hopefully vB can catch up. I have both phpBB3 and vB forums btw.

The only way they can catch up is if A) they outright take ideas from BB3 or B) go to opensource.
