I was stating the obvious from an SMF stance.

If you're suggesting I'm "trolling" or similar things in that manner then I do suggest that you look at yourself through-out this entire thread

The fact you're blatantly flaming those around you and implying that the other participants in this thread are not as skilled and/or knowledgeable as you is heavily looked down upon.

My, such a hypocrite it isn't even funny...

Right myBB1.4 is still built from 1.2 as it wasn't a complete rewrite though. Same story with SMF1.0, 1.1, ect. The codebase was changed majorly in those versions.

Haha. Obviously your not very knowledgeable with forums (no offense) stating that "no software is more secure than the other". For example your saying myBB1.4 has the same security as phpbb1.

I think what he meant was if you are using the latest version of SMF you are virtually hacker safe? I doubt anyone would say you are hacker save forever using a software.

And by the way lufbra you sound like a little kid in this topic. At least Ryan is mature to actually discuss the main point of the topic.

I think we beat to death the discussion of security. We have successfully pointed out how they are all flawed in form or another.

Mybb...still can't be touched for features. I want to get back to something that's more comparible like features.

Sure enough that will probably lead in the same direction (imho). Both features offer different approach on adding features and both offer some the other doesn't. If you want wish to discuss about something specific though?

It's only fair to say that nothing is secure. While some softwares have better security from the start. myBB 1.4 is just starting up and we will see what its like in the future though. (Assuming it gains a lot of popularity - which im sure it will)

    Yeah...

SMF has "Show new replies to your posts.". MyBB and phpBB do not.

Even VB doesn't have that and for a simple reason. It's bloat. Why would you track a "post" and not a thread? It wouldn't be accurate anyways since it would rely on someone using a quote button. 99% of the time I hand type a quote (such as in this post).

I can easily add this feature to mybb if I wanted to. It would though be imho a pure waste of time.

Its bloat..? Uh Yeah, since when is something that is aided by an already built in function bloat? I could be wrong, but the way SMF handles new/old posts already handles this... How can it be bloat?

Seems like you are getting desperate. Plus, if a feature is so easy to add, show us..?

... why don't you actually look at SMF and see what the feature actually does, as you're assuming it does something it does not do.

That feature provides a list of topics (as if you're looking at a board) that you have replied in or have started. It's a major asset and eliminates the "watch this topic" feature that sends mail and crap in MyBB.

    Serious thread is serious. ;)

BOY!! Someone else who has problems reading posts!!

Had you read the reply properly, you'd have realized that the post was aimed at MrSandman, your post was quoted within it just for me to make my point...

Strange, I don't see you naming others (and there are) regarding to this, and yet in the same post you use the word hypocrite, and that's not flaming! LOL!!

... ordinarily people quote other posts to reply to them, not to prove some non-existent point that nobody cares about.

I didn't say that you were the only one flaming. You're taking this too seriously and are assuming I'm targeting only you. The only reason I said that about you was because you were targeting me (apparently).

Likewise using the word hypocrite isn't flaming, it's proving a point. Just like what you did. Now who is a hypocrite? Flaming someone who was flaming when they weren't flaming and yet said they were?

LOL! You lose the security debate, then you tell posters that you "want to get back to something that's more comparible like features."

Then when someone brings up a feature that SMF incorporate, you quickly reply with: "I can easily add this feature to mybb if I wanted to."

What's the point in discussing anything with you? Now you're changing the subject to hacks. Since now we're talking about mods, isn't it true that anyone can easily add any mod to SMF? SMF has any possible mod that anyone could ever want.

Apparently, the only "features" that RectangleMan (aka Labrocco) think is useful to EVERYONE are only the features that MyBB incorporated.

Yes pretty evident you have never used or admined a SMF forum. This is one of the best features I have found in a forum software. Most people dont want to "subscribe" every time they post in a topic than go all the way in there user panel to see it. Even subscriptions without new posts are saved saved there. Funny you say SMF carries bloat.

As I stated before this is what I consider bloat... Star Ratings, Personal Pads per User, popup buddylist, ect. which should only be as mods.

The most important part (imho) is how you get informed about posts and a list of recent posts.

If you like vbulletin and dont have money to buy it! then go for Mybb it is the best and also gives the same feel as vb, its really good and also very secure! I love Mybb, next option will be for smf they are the best with lots of mods!

MyBB automatically sends you emails on updates to threads your subscribed to unless you choose otherwise in the thread / UserCP.

I guess that is a matter of opinion then.

Well yes but it cant do what the "SMF replied posts" link can do. You can view it on the boardindex and it will only show *new* replies to your post in a easy manner. It will not display all subscriptions.

Yes so was RectangleMan's comment but I guess everyone can consider there own bloated features for their forum.

    For the record:

    1) You bring up that MyBB had a "lawsuit" against them.
    2) labrocca corrects that statement
    3) You accuse MyBB of looking "similar" to other software like google is similar to yahoo, among other things.
    4) Other people correct those statements as well
    5) One person, who was upset they didn't get their support post answered, posted some harsh words (who wouldn't?) Eventually this person was helped and their problem fixed.
    6) You stir that up more for several posts.
    7) You bring up something about no plugins/mods existing for certain things
    8) After you are informed/corrected you state that even though the plugin exists that it wasn't done right. ("That mybb mod needs work to be more effective. It looks amateur-ish.")
    9) You accuse people of signing up so they can talk on a forum in a topic that your talking in.
    10) You accuse the MyBB Group of paying people to "lie" (which is false)
    11) You say one person needed a more knowledgeable person to fix their problem. (Which is true, but every software has problems that require someone more knowledgeable at one point or another.)
    11) You accuse MyBB of being notorious for being hacked (which is false)
    12) You accuse MyBB again of "stealing" (See #3)
    13) You continue to put fuel on the fire
    14) ... I got tired of reading the flaming by here....

Obviously your here to promote and defend the bulletin board you like. However you and others are and have been making snide and rude remarks which are not necessary. If you fire upon something, expect return fire which is exactly what has happened. I have only come here to clear up the false remarks made about MyBB. If SMF or phpBB developers choose not to, then that is purely their choice as well and I completely respect that. I do not make it a point to trash other software in my posts as it is definately not in my interest or anyone else. I believe that everyone differs and forum software is one of those things that differ upon everyone. My only objective is to clear up a few mis-facts and to state that for anyone who is looking for a forum software, simply choose what is best for you. Setup each forum you want to try and test them out and see which one works for you best.

A tactful solution would be to ignore this thread.

Some people won't quit in saying the software they have chosen is better than others. It's pointless to debate which is better as all software have good and bad points in equal accordance.

While I may be SMF team, I don't represent the development at all nor do I represent the stance of SMF on this matter. This is my own personal opinions.

************* CHANGING THE SUBJECT SOMEWHAT *************************

After my security analysis of SMF and MyBB.
I could not find a single method to hack my own MyBB forum (it's not even latest version).

    But I'll tell you what....

I can hack SMF. In fact, I can take down MrSandman's TWO SMF Forums in a matter of minutes.

Of course, don't take this the wrong way, I would never do it. I am not threatening MrSandman either, all I am saying is, he should back up his database and lay low for a while, because his forums are vulnerable. Also MrSandman you should update your forum to nightly builds if you can.

SMF is nice btw I like your skin MrSandman

    For the record:

(okay, I'll make point to each issue)

    1) You bring up that MyBB had a "lawsuit" against them.
And I posted the source (ref) from Scott MacVicar himself. (Just so people know, Scott MacVicar is a vB Devoloper).

    2) labrocca corrects that statement
    (see above)

    3) You accuse MyBB of looking "similar" to other software like google is similar to yahoo, among other things.
Google and Yahoo doesn't look anywhere as similar. MyBB does look almost "copyright infringement" similar to vB. There is a thread on the vBulletin official website about this as well. ref: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=220426

    4) Other people correct those statements as well
(see above) is sources to my claim

    5) One person, who was upset they didn't get their support post answered, posted some harsh words (who wouldn't?) Eventually this person was helped and their problem fixed.
I'm glad Labracco helped this person.

    6) You stir that up more for several posts.
I make points from my personal administrating POV with hands on experience with SMF, MyBB, phpBB, vB, IPB and phpBB3. Do what you want with my POV. I don't care if people are offended. I call it the way I see it with the sources that I provided that help elevate my POV.

    7) You bring up something about no plugins/mods existing for certain things
I bring up certain mods that some admins (including myself) need. Now that I verbalized certain mods that admins would appreciate, perhaps now a mod developer may want to look into building something. No biggie. -- But lacking some of those mods makes MyBB useless for my needs. And maybe there are other folks out there turning away from MyBB because it doesn't fulfill their 'personal' needs. I think MyBB team should take critics as a way to better the software, not challenge critics for bringing up their POVs as to why the software wouldn't work for them. Jm2c

    8) After you are informed/corrected you state that even though the plugin exists that it wasn't done right. ("That mybb mod needs work to be more effective. It looks amateur-ish.")
That was one plugin that come to find out, after digging through the mod search page, and asking several people on here, it did exist. My personal opinion was it looks a bit amature-ish and isn't as powerful as one might like it to be. Again, one should take criticizing as feedback to make it better. How did MyBB make it this far without criticism?

    9) You accuse people of signing up so they can talk on a forum in a topic that your talking in.
Yes, it strikes me as odd that a large number of people signed up just to post in this thread. All of which defend MyBB tooth and nail, even when they're wrong. For example, how did you find this thread? Certainly this isn't the only MyBB vs phpBB vs SMF thread on the net, is it? If so, you should be flattered then. 9 pages and counting.

    10) You accuse the MyBB Group of paying people to "lie" (which is false)
    (see above)

    11) You say one person needed a more knowledgeable person to fix their problem. (Which is true, but every software has problems that require someone more knowledgeable at one point or another.)
I pointed that out because of all the hype Labrocco was creating. i.e., how simple to use, easy to upload plugins, MyBB building software based on simplicity for users... then shortly after, a person struggled just to make it work on their server.

    11) You accuse MyBB of being notorious for being hacked (which is false)
(google it. I think there are several threads on DigitalPoint alone titled > "MyBB was hacked! Help!!!" ...just saying)

    12) You accuse MyBB again of "stealing" (See #3)
(See #1) - I provided a source from Scott MacVicar, the vB Devoloper

    13) You continue to put fuel on the fire
You, as a forum developer, should know that forums are for discussions and debates and personal opinions. Just like this thread - Just like these 9 pages. You call it "fuel to the fire" because you don't like nor agree with my personal opinion. If there was no online community debates, then you wouldn't be a forum developer. Think about it.

    14) ... I got tired of reading the flaming by here....
Your definition of flaming and my definition of flaming is obviously different. BTW, DigitalPoint mods don't allow flaming on these boards. If anyone was flaming, this thread would be locked and people would be banned.

I hope this clears the record. :)

Hey Tarkan, after seeing the above post from MrSandMan, I guess your post just above flew over his head, maybe he was too busy trying to defend his beloved SMF again, or as what is usual for him, when there's a confrontation that's real (and it appears you have a real conflict for him) against the software(supposedly hacker safe and all that) he so loves, he just can't believe it's possible.

Thanks for your post Tarkan, it was a pleasure to read it. :)
