That could be the result of many things, Trippen. There are a lot of bug reports and cries for help at http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/index.php right now. On the one hand, we have at least one member of the phpBB team advising people to use EasyMod for the upgrade to avoid the problem of human-injected typos with manual update. On the other hand, there seem to be errors in the "Code Changes" release that cause EasyMod to balk and as of a few minutes ago there is still no validated EasyMod compatible update released. The validated EM version is usually available 24-28 hours after release of an update - why has that not happened in this case?

It's still in development. Reportedly, they are no longer making any substantive changes to 2.x (only security updates and bug fixes) because of the anticipated release of Olympus but I've been hearing about that for almost 2 years now.

    1. how did you do the update? did you use the Cnaged Code file for this?

    2. did you use EasyMod to do the update?

I used the changed code file ;)
I always do mods and upgrades manually.
I like to know what is changed and i can learn from doing it manually :)

The latest from the phpBB team:

    http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=1843187#1843187

So they are basically telling us that if your forum has any number of MODs at all, there's a good chance you're going to need to uninstall and then reinstall many or most of them.

That would explain why they haven't released an EM validated version - they KNOW it is going to "break" a lot of forums out there.

    Perfect...

If you need some help, let me know :)
    What mods did you install?
I can see that if you have one of Pthiriik's mods installed (cat. hierarchy, pcp) the upgrade won't go without errors.
That's one of the main reasons i don't use those.
The biggest mod i have is the attachement mod and it still works great :)

I appreciate the offer, 993ti, but I'm confident I can figure it out, if I decide to figure it out. Assuming I do update using phpBB, I have 4 forums to update myself and a few others who look to me for assistance.

    What angers me is twofold:

    1. the phpBB team has a validation process in place for phpBB MODs - if, as some team members are now implying or publicly stating, people shouldn't be using those MODs or non-standard templates/skins but should stick to plain vanilla (aka boring as hell and lacking a lot of features one wants in a forum) subSilver installations, then why the hell are they validating MODs in the first place? don't they think that perhaps by giving official approval to something they are implying to people that they DO approve of its use?

    2. there are reports all over the phpBB forums about broken and sometimes inaccessible boards as a result of applying the update - NOW they tell us that all MODs that alter sessions variables will be broken by this update - they must have (or damn well SHOULD have) known this when the update was released - why the hell did they wait a week to alert people? even after people starting posting all those "Help! My forum is broken now" cries for help?

I am totally disgusted with the way phpBB has handled this. I really do think it's time for a switch.

I'm using the guest session mod by Cyberalien, still works great.
The only thing to watch out for is when you have to replace lines.

I don't dispute what you say, 993ti. But if that's true, then why this post at phpBB.com?

Strange, i'm also using global announcements lite
Probably the one that still works with 2.0.18 :D
So, basically they say you have to uninstall the mods and wait for an updated version of the mod.
Or, wait with upgrading untill a fix for the mod is released, but that would be a security risk.

I don't think they know what they're saying. This update was botched from the start. I'd be a lot less irritated if they'd just acknowledge that, apologize for all the users who have posted with horror stories of broken boards, and start telling some of those people how they can go about fixing the mess, instead of doing the DMOZ "you get what you pay for - we're all volunteers - you should have known the rules" BS...

They're just like cops, they don't like to admit they're wrong :D
Ow, now that i think about it, the last visit mod by Niels stopped working.
That one alters the sessions, a snippet of that code is removed in 2.0.18.
I don't need it that much so i uninstalled it.
It would be worse if the portal and album stopped working, lol.

It is as mythical as Olympus.

I installed .18 on a new site the day I put it up.. and didn't have any problems.. but my take on the update was it was fairly limited in scope. Perhaps I have misread things... But it only changed like a file or two.... Lack of sleep and many days past may have me remembering wrong.

If you haven't modded or customized your forum, you probably won't have a lot of problems. If your forum includes anything which alters sessions or has added new tables to the database, you may have problems, ranging from MODs not working anymore to minor bugs to locking yourself out of the forum including the Admin CP, according to various threads at phpBB.com.

It's not just a few files, though - you MUST have been sleepy :)
