I have thought about switching to vBulletin for my forum (phpBB) --

    www.mp2kmag.com/mappoint/discussion

I know the conversion is easy, but there are so many existing links to specific forum posts both within the forum and also from external sites. I am afraid all the links will be broken..

Is there a good solution for this or am I better off sticking with phpBB ?

    Thanks,
    Eric

If you plan on getting bigger, I would switch as soon as possible... search engine traffic might be down for a month or so (while new stuff gets spidered), but better to swallow that pill early than later.

I'd agree. If you would like to move to vB, you need to do it as soon as you can...just to minimize the loss of links just as you have said.

The actual conversion process is easy, so no need to worry about it getting harder and harder as your forums get bigger and bigger...but links to threads and what not inside posts will be broken

OK, convince me.. I've been running this phpBB forum since 2002 and it has 12726 articles. What are the upsides to weigh against the broken links?

uhhhh phpbb sucks the proverbial wang.

vbulletin is the best money you'll spend on the internet ever. besides a hooker or something.

looks like they repatched the update shawn.....i think i'll wait a few days before upgrading

ah hahahaha...I think SVZ just summed it up quite nicely.

If you can afford vB, just go for it. I promise it will be a good investment. 10 times the features, 10 times the security, 10 times the mod...Plus it is actually being developed. phpBB is a lame duck, imo. The development team has fallen through and I seriously doubt we are going to be seeing phpBB 3.x within the next year, probably 2

Switch to vBulletin. Or at the very least, get better free software.

I bought the vBulleting license and will be moving this forum --

    http://www.mp2kmag.com/mappoint/discussion to a new home --

http://www.mapforums.com ! I have already registered the domain.

I am excited about it :)

Anyway, what mods and the like do you recommend for my forum ?

I am thinking about freezing the old board and leave it in place so as not to break links to the existing content and just point people over to use the new forum, should I worry about a duplicate content penalty?

    Thanks!
    Eric

ps. sorry to revive an old thread.
