PhpBB / Vb Speedwise

Im considering buying vb. I currently have phpbb but how do these compare speedwise?

My phpbb forum has been quite slow for a while, not a server issue as the rest of the site seems fine. It is heavily modded, are there any mods for speeding up the forum?

Also, since vb does not require as many mods as phpbb, it should be faster? am i right? or totally wrong? I have seen vb forums which are fast and then i have seen those which are terribly slow as well.

What are your thoughts when it comes to the two speedwise? Especially those who have used both? Should i still go ahead and buy vb?

    thanks

i think it depends on how many server intense mods you have installed on your forum.

if all you want is a basic discussion forum then phpbb is likely to be faster (since it has less features)

It depends on how you run it more than anything and where your bottleneck is. vBulletin definitely scales better than phpBB, but I'm not really sure where your hitting speed problems, so hard to say in your case.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll still try out vb sometime since the forum is an integral part and used more than anything else (pretty much). I cannot figure out whats causing the speed problems either, I don't remember doing anything recently.

    Hi,
We were using phpbb2 when starting out and later changed over to vBulletin.
vBulletin is definately faster - and as a bonus the users like it better too :)

Most of the time, if a vb forum is slow, its due to its hosting situation.

There are vBulletin hacks which can slow a site down. But usually, they get removed or rewritten for that reason.
