PHPBB or vbulletin?

Discussion in 'vBulletin' started by Sleepy_Sentry, Feb 25, 2007.

I plan on developing a forum with a premium domain name, gamerforums.net, and then selling it.

I noticed a lot of popular forums use vBulletin. Is it that much better over PHPBB?

I would never even participate as a member in a phpbb forum, can't stand how slow and annoying it is for me to use.

As the winner of the phpBB of the Year 2006 with a forum of mine I might be biased. So I say .. phpBB is better. I also own VB and the other scripts too, but as a theme designer I like phpBB more. And love the code changes as upgrades and the installation of hacks: it relaxes me :D

I was going to ask the same question. I have a forum under phpbb and functionality is fine for my users (though, sure, there's a lot more fun stuff in vbulletin). But recently we got hit with a lot of spammers. Is vbulletin really a ton more secure? Is it worth spending the money for a license or should I just bone up on some anti-Spam stuff and keep the phpbb forum going?

I'm not making any money off the forums at the moment, and they're not as active as they used to be. I'd actually like to weed the forums out and almost start over from scratch to let them build up again. That's another reason I'm leaning towards vbulletin. (Side question: Can I port over the user data from phpbb to vbulletin, so all my members will still have the same usernames/passwords? Or do i lose it all?)

I personally think that the best forum software is that which your competition is using. If you want to bring over their users, the setup has to be the same - and then better on top of that.

My recipe for success was just that. The site I used to go to changed and alienated a lot of members. I stood up my own site with the same software, and then made it better with hacks/add-ons. Now my site is huge because it was easy for people to make the transition to my site.

So really ... you gotta think outside of the "software" box and into the "visitors/usability" arena. :)

PHPBB is ofcourse far superior with mods n stuff and. It is more easy to edit as well.

For coders and custom programmers i would say PHPBB is better, but Vbulletin is, if you want a clean forum, the best Paid forum around.

PHPBB is useless without adding the perfect mods.

    We do NOT recommend IPB.

Might not be the case if compared against vBulletin which is in fact, the superior one in terms of mods availability.
Templating is fairly easy to handle if you have some time to dedicate to studying it.
