phpbb installation

When I decided I wanted a forum for my site, and that I would set it up myself, I had never until then uploaded a forum, and so I did use the 'instruction manual' for phpbb. I got until about step 3 before being completely lost (it told me to do something with Microsoft Access), so in the end I decided to simply upload it as I would anything that needs a database. I created a new DB, created and added a user to it, changed the permissions on a few files in the unzipped phpbb package, found the install page and did it all myself.

This was really just to ask why is are the instructions to install phpbb so difficult? It could be done in a 10-step thing, even for novices such as myself.

Do you have a control panel. I have added a phpbb using control panel without instructions. I am the type that follows the precept when all else fails read the instructions. :)

Where I needed instructions was keeping the porn spammers out. It got to be too big a headache for me to keep going.

I have used in conjunction with a mini-course where it was needed for only a short time (not time enough for spammers to find and hit). For purposes like that you can put up in password protected directory and disallow robots for good measure.

    Good luck with it.

I use cPanel, if that's what you mean. I didn't use the windows control panel at all, though the instructions did say to do something with it.

I did get it running quite easily. I don't usually read manuals either, but given as I haven't got much experience with databases I thought it would be more prudent to begin with. I just really couldn't believe how difficult they made it sound!

No problems with spammers as of yet, but thanks for the tips. Glad you got rid of yours!

Interesting. It's been a while since I actually followed the installation instructions for phpBB (probably 3 years, lol)...but just recently I installed it for fun (yes, for fun, haha) and it wasn't bad at all...I can't believe they'd tell you that you needed MS Access for the installation, that's crazy...it's also hard to believe that they could manage to make the installation readme confusing

    *shrugs*

    I hate phpBB :p

Isn't there a separate installation file that comes with phpBB (the zip package)?

Something about that guide just doesn't seem right

Hahah it's called Fantastico :) Or cheap installers like myself who do it for like $2.00-$5.00 via paypal. I say if you're installing it yourself install the fully modded version and make it worth your time.

I disagree on all counts, but that's probably because I've installed my own software so many times :p

I hate how fantastico creates crazy-named databases for you...and I wouldn't pay somebody to install phpBB either, but I can see how somebody who is totally new to it would want to do this.

I also hate those pre-modded forums...they're so overloaded and hard to upgrade/customize. I say buy vB or IPB and not worry about any of it! :) Or...check out SMF, it's a great, free alternative.

That's not the only thing I don't like about Fantastico, and it doesn't take me 20 minutes to install phpBB either :p
