If you are a real beginner, it won't be very easy: while you can just upload a little file in the admincp for vBulletin hacks, you need to go into the files yourself for phpBB. However, installing mods isn't more than searching, replacing or adding new code. Also most probable you must upload some new files.

But I recommend to have some PHP knowledge before doing MODs. If you don't have much web development experience, it might turn out a bit wrong, and it is not that easy to make phpBB Mods :)

Also note that there are a few MODs out which take over 2 hours to install. Always take a backup too .. ;)

    Just my 2 cents :)

    Aha; that way :)
Sorry lol; I really didn't got it ;)

Well, at this moment it is not really possible to hack a normal phpBB board. But if it is MODded, make sure the MODs installed are verified by phpBB's modding team. If they aren't, the board could be succesfully attacked.
But a clean phpBB 2.0.22 at this moment is difficult to hack :)

    Regards, ;)

Yes if you have a old version of phpbb it can be hacked using various methods but if you keep it updated and put some nice and shiny mods then it will be safe as a elephant vB is more difficult to hack cause they dont reveal the source code to thousands of people like phpbb :)

Yeah I use to use phpbb but for some reason i just prefer vb now its worth the money with the fast support and also its just easier to use for me and my users phpbb gives me a headache ( i have no php knowledge) lol anyhow

phpbb as long as you make some changes i heard its fine there are hundreds or thousands of big forums out there that dont have any problems so im sure its ok.

If someone wanted to hack any forum im pretty sure they could do it. Whether its vb, phpbb, or whatever. They just need to be motivated.

It is a fact that vBulletin is much better, but of course it isn't cheap :) You must make a choice ;)

It's a fact that my brand new VB got down just as any phpBB when being hacked. It's a fact that most of the time the hackers put an index file so that if you have the files BACKED up too you need 2 minutes to restore. It's also a fact that if you're updated with the script you're having less chances to get hacked and it's also a fact that lately there were server hacks and that means ALL sites go down. I had 10 scripts or more hacked just because of this, no matter how much the script cost or how much I spent time with updating the script.

The problem is that there is NO 100% secure script. If you keep backups of files and databases, then you're safe. If not, then there's no one to blame ;)

It is not that it is a poorly written script that makes it so commonly hacked. The problem is that it is so widely used hackers concentrate their efforts for the biggest returns. If you keep up to date with the updates most likely you won't have any problems. If you are using an outdated version expect to get hacked.

I have seen both phpbb and vbulletin get hacked. The phpbb one they stole everyone's email address, then brought the board down. The vbulletin one they kept the board working, but exploited holes in Internet Explorer to add a trojan to unpatched computers surfing the site. Not pretty!

Stay up-to-date on patches for whatever you choose. Also, any mod you add has the potential to be hacked no matter how popular or safe you think it is. Your best bet is to always keep good backups.
