I have recently purchased a phpBB forum and it is being spammed with pornography. When I first viewed it, when it was listed here for sale, I knew it was riddled with pornography but I thought I could tidy it up and stop it happening. I am manually deleting all these posts but I would like to be able to stop these people altogether. I have selected that people need to register and I am banning their IP address and username when they make new porn posts and I have created a huge list of censored words but of course they keep changing their username and I think they must be using proxy websites, so banning their IP address isn't really all that much use, but I wondered if anyone has a suggestion as to what else I can do? I am very knew to this type of website as well, so I haven't worked out all the functions available in admin but I am willing to learn Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is the site: http://www.dealerlife.info It is my desire that this site be available to genuine users, people in the industry and other like minded people. I would also like to be able to stop people using it as a free advertising portal. I hope to be able to sell advertising space there soon, when I learn how, LOL Please leave your suggestions Cheers Misty
Firstly phpBB is a free forum (you dont have to buy it!!!! - just download and use) - http://www.phpbb.com/downloads/ Regarding Spamming! please use Image Code Verification (Enabled by default in latest version) You also need GD Library enabled in your web server (Available by default in most of the hosting server) -- Check our forum site at http://forums.bhutanobserver.bt/ - No Spams till now!
Hi abixalmon Thank you for replying. I take your point that it is free to download unfortunately I didn't know that when I viewed it but of course I was also paying for the traffic (porn or not it's still traffic!) and the fact that it was already earning. I am learning fast that not everyone is honest! I was told by the seller that he had someone make the site for him which is obviously untrue. Anyway, how easy is it, do you know, to upgrade to the latest version, considering I am a total newbie to this? I did notice that it was saying that I didn't have the latest version but I have no idea how to do these things Cheers Misty
Download --> Upload to the web server --> Use installer included with the scripts --> Configure, DONE!!!! NOTE: Add me to your MSN so that i can assist you in upgrading your installation! google for "upgrading phpbb xxxx to latest" where xxxx is your version!
also you can download mods that require a simple question to be answered (such as 2+3=) and if they're bots, they cant read so tada no spam
Hey that sounds great because I would say that a lot of the posts are exactly that Good thinking! LOL Cheers Misty
Whats this, you can download it for free??? Man this was one of the reason why I wanted to learn php so I can build a forum and now you telling me its free to download......aaaaahhhhhhh. Lucky I didn't go to uni and study php ....I luv you...AHEM!! I mean thank you for sharing this I would of done it the hard way but I still need to go through the process . I'm guessing you can customize it right e.g. change colors? CHEERS
Now that I've downloaded the source file. This might sound weird but what do I do with it now or how do I set up the forum or customize the skin? Kind regards CHEERS
actually i m new in PHPBB. i m not being able to manage PHPBB. though i installed PHPBB. but hte prob is a big logo of PHPBB is staying at the top of the forum. including this several probs i m facing to configure PHPBB. is there any gd tutorials or free ebooks those i can follow 2 configure it properly and edit it? PM me PLZZ.
Mistyone, what version of phpBB are you running right now? I'm guessing it's still on phpBB2, as phpBB3 focused on fighting against spam. There are lots of mods you can install to prevent it.
You have zero spam protection on your page. It could be phpbb, vbulletin or whatever and you would get tons of spam on your forum without it. 1. you don't have a captcha on the register page 2. you don't have account activation enabled (email activation) I recommend you upgrading to phpbb3 which is pretty simple. I know, because I've done it myself. I run two phpbb3 forums and I don't get any spam now from bots since I upgraded. Of course when your on phpbb3 you need to applied 1 & 2 listed above.
