Adding mods to either vb/phpbb is pretty easy and no programming skills are required.

Just look for the instructions in each mod and follow them.

I would recommend PHPBB is your website is starting, if you are making good money, then evolve to VB. No point of wasting your money on VB then closing the site a year or two.

Transferring from PHPBB <-> VB is also pretty easy and there are tools to do such thing.

Edit: The current forum looks nice. To add hacks, visit: www.phpbbhacks.com

    Peace,

Doesn't vB have converters with the software? or a separate (free) download of a bunch of converters? I remember seeing it... and they had a TON of various forums...

If you are really serious about the forum and if you expect a good amount of visitors, then go for phpBB. But as azizny said, if you are not sure about the success of the forum, go for phpBB. Both have their own pros and cons.

maybe I'm biased, but I hate phpbb with a passion
    may I recommend simplemachines.org

probably the best BB software that's free, imo.

I think you just narrowed the choices down to phpBB and... phpBB :)

And why do you hate phpBB so much? Especially this new version, it certainly looks like completely new software :)

I'm using SimpleMachines for a forum and I'm happy with it at this early stage.

But I can see that vb will be the solution when the forum grows large.

Is there an easy way to port SM to VB?

    Cheers.

PS: Incidentally, I set up phpBB to test it out on the same forum and I started getting spam posts very quickly. For this reason I wouldn't recommend it.

    The code is horrible
it's a very redundant, insecure script
then again, I haven't looked at the new version..

but the last version I looked at, it looked like it was coded by someone who just read "how to make a database website in 24 hours" or something.
