Hey, Okay I have been waiting a long time for phpBB 3. Since Feburary 2006, and now its here. However since it took such a long time, I have changed my plans and I have been focusing on going vBulletin instead. However as the forum is not on vBulletin yet and now phpBB 3 as been released I am a little stuck on what software I should use.

I am not asking which is the best and being compeltly stupid, however I am asking those who have the knowledge if phpBB 3 lacks anything that vBulletin as. Also what are the MODs like for phpBB 3? Also as anyone seen a good styled phpBB 3 forum?

If you can help, that will be great.

    Thanks,
    BlueEew.

phpbb lacks tons of things vbulletin has as far as features. Mods for vbulletin are better and more feature-rich than those for phpbb.

I'd strongly suggestion you go with vbulletin instead of phpbb if you're serious about running your forum.

I think it is stable, phpbb.com runs it with 2000 users on at a time, 2.5 million posts, 300000 users, and I've never encountered any problems on it or my own phpbb3 tests

The issue with stability is more about security and being bug free than the ability to handle high server loads.

Well that was my point, having a large memberbase and amount of data the bugs are more likely to come out than with a small forum and also means a higher threat to security because of the popularity. They've been in development for a long time and gone through a ton of release candidates to become bug free and also had the software audited by a security company in that time.

If you have the money, and want simple to install mods go with vB though. The mod installation procedure for bb3 is still inconvenient

If you can open each of the source files & have a solid understanding of what they mean, go with phpBB3.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go with VB.

I would go with vBulletin, but if you know PHP, MySQL and learn how phpBB works then it is easy for you to customize it and fix things yourself.

I would definitely go with MyBB, if you don't wanna shell out some money for vBulletin. I have been a fan of phpBB for quite some time now but its really a waste of time to keep modifying the source files to add new mods

The forum already exists its on a free hosting company with phpBB 2 installed, I think after reading all of your guys and gals comments I am better off going with vBulletin. :)
