PHP safe

    I have some questions about site security and i don't want to spam with new threads over and over again. so i will ask here .
    the first thing is that i have a directory with CHMOD 777 because i need tu upload some pics to it.. is this safe ? what wrong can be happend?

    well there is a problem because i have 2 directorys one with images ( this one can be turn off and on i mean to 750 and to 777 when i upload) but i have one directory for downloads... and this need to stay 777 all the time...is there a way to protect it ?

    when i enter subs.net7.net (on Chrome) without http:// or www. before the link it give me to save the php file from the server. Help please.
