Well, if you are going for Blogging, Dont turn back, just grab Wordpress and install it to your Hosting and make your Site Up.

Welll, If you dont know installation, rent one to setup and configure it for you. I hope you can see my footer. WP stands for Wordpress :)

    Thanks.

wp = wordpress. Go to wordpress.com if you want a no hassles blog. go to wordpress.org if you want total control.

have a look at www.opensourcecms.com for all the ready to go but free systems you can install

these days (ie post 1999) you can have a fully functional website without coding a thing.

make your website own is very difficult,
you must consider a lot of things...

but if you want to start a website soon, i think use CMS is good cheap way.
if you want to make it yourself, maybe yu must learn PHP from the beginning.
there is other web programming but some of them is not open source

    good luck :)

ok. I dont know if Im stating the ovious here. But you actually dont NEED to use php or a CMS to make a page.
The basic components are html and css. And if you know how to program in java, learning html and css should be really easy.
You shouldnt have a hard time learning php either, its a little messy, but it probably looks similar to java.

The question is rather, what kind off website do you need? a blog? a brosure? an ecommerce?
what tools you should use usually depends on what kind off site you are making.

When it comes to the 3d website you are talking about, you can make 3d websites in flash right now.
What you probably have been hearing about is the new 3d engines the browser geeks are working on. this technologies wont be usable on the net for ages.

Wordpress is a great choice like everybody is saying. I've used it for years, including the MU hack. However, I believe that drupal offers significantly more flexibility, it can look like a blog or just about anything. There are tons of modules for it and the themes are easy to customize. I'd start with drupal if you can and you should also pick up some basic PHP skills regardless of which way you go. You don't have to be able to program complete systems but it is very helpful to at least be able to understand the code and implement small things.

If you also want to get into PHP programming, and possibly want to create your own blog software (some people do not like WP)... a great open source PHP blog software is JoltBlog. It's a good source to work from to get to know PHP more.

You can also build your website with HTML (frontend) PHP is for scripts and what not.
