I would like to make a video site.
It may or may not be like youtube.

There should be streaming videos, subscriptions, payment options etc...

What are the differences between PHP or ASP .net for video sites? I need to know this in order to hire coders properly.

Also, are there examples of video sites using different programming languages?
Is there a way I can find out what xtube, youtube, redtube, etc.. are using?

    Thanks guys.

First, asp is crap if you ask me. It's windows proprietary, you're going to pay more for the code because hardly anyone does it, and then you're going to be hard-pressed to find someone to work on it later if you have any problems. Did I mention that Windows servers are pieces? Go with PHP, it's what a good 80-90% of sites are run on, and sites like youtube and ebay etc are all custom-coded, my guess would be in C. Redtube and Xtube both appear to be on PHP (Xtube for sure, redtube i'm assuming but I'm almost positive it isn't ASP). Look around, google, and you'll see most sitse are .php, although nowadays you use rewrite to mask the URLs, but they are almost all using PHP.

LMAO at the usual anti-microsoft rubbish... when we offered both PHP and .Net it was .Net that was cheaper as it is much quicker to develop in than PHP.

Dont "go for either", post your job and chose your developers on your own reasoning and let your experts decide which is the best language to write the site in. If you cannot even trust them to select which language you really shouldnt be trusting them to write your site.

i would have gone ahead and told you to go with PHP just bcoz its easier to find PHP developers. But this was until i read Astaroth's post. What he said made much more sense. Post the job. Get ideas from the experts who are actually gonna do the job. Talk to them and then make an informed decision.

    The language is fairly unimportant.

Finding someone with good experience in streaming video can be difficult. If you are simply offering clips then its easy enough, if you are wanting to inject adverts and cut streams without buying expensive products to do it and paying per server, then you need someone who has worked in the area before.
