Hi all please i am curious about this. I wish to know the difference between a php/mySql developer and programmer. What do you call those that install, edit and configure a php script and makes it functional? What do you call those that write the scripts it self? Thanks
I'd call a person that writes it the developer or programmer, and the person that configures it is called the monkey
There is no difference between the word developer and programmer really. Though Developer may usually refer to people who use Web languages and programmer for people who use languages for computer software. There are lots of coders, freelancers... but few have official programmer training or a degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering.
They are basically the same thing. Least for all real purposes, those looking to hire use whichever they prefer. The distinction could be made that a developer is one who is engaged in the long term process of building software whereas a programmer is a broad, general designation for anyone who writes code (be it web, desktop, embedded, mobile etc). Doesn't matter though, general usage is what matters.
In summary if i never wrote a script but i am able to have a functional site using these scripts what will i call my self? Though I can edit to suit clients needs. Thanks for the last 2 responses.
then you would be called a webmaster or site administrator, unless you make considerable alteration to the code, then you could also be called a developer or programmer... its really your choice how to market yourself with any labels.. the difference (to me) between developer and prorammer, is that a programmer actually does the coding. A developer MAY do coding but he certainly doesnt have to. He could be in a management position leading programmers to develop a certain product, in which he would then be the Lead Developer or Development Manager, or whatever. Labels mean little in reality .. they are just marketing tools. I'll have my developer/programmer get right on that code change for you ASAP.
I agree with the above about the terms simply being marketing tools. If you only change configuration settings, then you aren't a developer/programmer. I can plenty of configuration files for many different applications on my PC, but that doesn't mean I need to know how the program works, or code it Oh, and no thanks for my first post? lol
