I wish to setup a directory, probably like millions of other people.

My computer skills are very limited, i dont have a huge amount of knowledge and even simple thml can be very hard for me.

How hard is it to set one up? Do you need substantial skills or can a simple dumbo like me do one?

I know every man and his dog has one and thinks theres is the best, but i really would like to try my hand at it and as such, if i dont, i'll never know.

Some opinions on how hard it is, would be greatly appreciated. Any advice that you can provide will be greatly appreciated ;)

    Cheers.

Creating something like a directory would be a little complicated, but not too hard. My opinion is probably a little biased though since I know the language well. I will try to look at it from your standpoint.

Considering even simple HTML can be hard, then it would probably be a diffecult task for you. However, there are a ton of PHP related resources to learn, from tutorials to ebooks. If you have some time to dedicate to learning the language and actually focus yourself to learning the language, you will find it's not as hard as it seems from a non-coder standpoint.

You can start at tizag.com for a good intro to the language. Then there's tutorial sites like pixel2life.com and good-tutorials.com. Tutorials are a decent place to pick up on the language as you can see how others begin a project and how they use different functions of the language to do different things.

The more you work with it ( not copy and pasting ) the better and faster you will learn. It can be rough or detering at first, but I promise if you do a bit of work you will pick up on it. Give it time, don't expect to be pumping out a directory after working with PHP for a few weeks. Learn the basics, move onto functions and continue to write small scripts to test things you are learning. They don't have to do anything really.

For example, if you are learning about functions, write a small couple line script to pass arguments to the function to do something, whether you are adding a few numbers or whatever. Once you feel you have a good grasp on functions, do the same with arrays and so on.

No problem.. every programming language will provide some of the in-built functions to do some operations.
For creating directory, you can use the function mkdir()
In this you can set the attributes to that newly created directory.....just do a try and tell

If your on linux you can use Xampp, or you can download PHP/Apache/MySQL seperatly. On windows Xampp or WampServer. There is no trial edition, they're all free.

See....im showing how much i dont know. ;) What i meant was i did see where you can download and use the free version, then assuming you like it you buy a paid version that gives you a few extra features, access to the forum etc.

I will download and try it out.....if its too hard, i may just have to buy a new directory built and get a person to ftp it for me.

Well i think thats what i have to do ;)
