Funny enough, that is a very helpful suggestion. Of all the php sites out there, php.net is by far the most helpful and informative.

I would suggest picking up a book that suits your tastes at Barnes and Noble to get started. They usually cover the getting started steps pretty good, and without knowing you I wouldn't know what books to recommend - although I'm a big fan of O'Reilly books and the "Bible" books. Also, I would recommend a book that covered both PHP and MySQL since they almost always go hand in hand.

Once you have a comfort level, just check out the online reference at php.net, but pay a lot of attention to the comments. The comments are the gold IMO. Zend's site is cumbersome, but also has a wealth of information.

Other than that, there are almost as many php sites out there as there are webmaster and SEO sites. I've never really found one site outside of php.net that stood out above the rest.

i agree with nevets, go get a book that guides you through... it'such easier than reading from a website...

a good beginners book won't set your wallet back all that much... ;)
