If you buy the $50 version, it comes with private technical support and upgrade services.

I'm interested in starting a directory. Would you recommend the biz directory? What about www.cplinks.com? (also free) Any opinion? Thanks.

I am in the process of trying both.
Bluenoser Forum Directory is using cplinks, while
BluenoserLinks is using the biz directory.

As of right now I prefer the biz directory because mostly of sub-sub categories and you can do much more with it while it staying SE friendly

This may all change in a couple of months more when I have had more time to play with both of them :)

PS It is possible to make the directory look much better than I did with cplinks, I just haven't had the time lately....So don't use that as a con :)

Thanks for the informed opinion, capebretoner. How do you feel about the admin functions for each?

Right now I like the biz directory admin better, however cplinks has just come out with an update, and I haven't had time to install and try out.
Has anyone out there installed the cplinks update yet?

Biz Directory had a nice easy interface, but I can't seem to make the categories static 'cause I installed it to a subdirectory. Looks like I'll be messing with CPLinks tonight...

I'm currently using phplinkdirectory and I'm surprised how good it actually is. Very easy to handle, looks very professionell. Downside: Uses Smarty which I hate :p

After reading this thread I've downloaded the script from phplinkdirectory.com, but I had a look at demos and it looks like dmoz, so is it the same script (or similar to) as was used in dmoz?

What? DMOZ? :) Of course it is a completely different script.
Maybe you got confused by seeing similar categories. Lots of people use similar categories that appear in DMOZ. I have posted a database of categories for starters for free in PHPLD forum that a lot of new PHPLD directories use and that category structure probably also follows DMOZ structure (not sure, I actually followed some other dirs).

i have only played with the biz-directory script, but i am very happy with it. It took a while for me to learn the structure, but once i did, it was easy to make modifications. If i were to go on and make a second directory (which i will soon..) i am going to use the biz directory script again, hands down.

if you want to check out teh directory, its in my sig below...

Even though I previously bashed phplinkdirectory, I have started using it... I actually merged all of my other directories into one single site (they were using a different script), and I am quite happy with the results so far. I have made some of my own modifications, but so far I am pleased with how it has worked for me.

I had made several script for small directories, probably you want to give it a try. It has an automated xml sitemap integration :D

I'm glad you are happy. I've worked hard on this for a couple of years now. I feel like we are starting to have a pretty strong user base, and with time, it will only get better.
