    Aloha,

I need to do some PHP for my dynamic websites.

Until now I have programmed PHP by copy-pasting from online examples, but I would like to become better and be able to work without using copy-paste.

I have worked as a .NET/C# developer for an eternity, so I guess I know my way around programming... it's just that I have never done any real PHP.

Can anybody recommend a great PHP book for me?

    Thanks, Mads

If you want to start from the begining and read the book all the way through, I would suggest the WROX book "Beginning PHP5". I borrowed the Oreilly book, "Php and MYSQL" from my son first. It is an excellent book also but I like the WROX style and presentation better. For me it presents the content in a more structured manner. You can download the samples from their site so that you do not need to sit there and type in all the examples.

The Oreilly book will most likely be a better reference manual. It I think is geared more toward a person with some programming knowledge that wants to learn php.

There is also a second WROX book that takes up where the Beginner leaves off and goes into more advanced stuff.

Both of these are pricey unless you shop a bit first.

Once upon a time I was decent in basic so that helps a little. Like you I have done a lot of copy, paste and hack. We shall see how it goes.

edit: There is also a thread under my username about 4-6 weeks back where I asked a similar question and several other books are mentioned by others.

What about the PHP for dummies book? I want to learn PHP but its seems like such a huge task at this point, like learning french or something. It sure is fun to code though and when I think of what I could do with PHP it really makes me feel excited.

this seems like a good site

I have previously enjoyed both Oreilly and Wrox books, so I'll go and take a look at these.

    Thanks, Mads
