VB is much better in this sense if you need those adding point etc systems, for phpbb you may need to do a lot of mods for that. VB is not free but it is definitely worth the money.

Points system and other similar "good" mods were available at phpbb2 but unfortunately none is released for phpbb3 yet.
vB's mod installation is times better than phpbb's where you have to spend hours to see the good results. I'd also suggest vB should you have nough money.

In terms of stabillity, both of them are stable with support and regular bug fixes.

Go for vBulletin, if you want modifications, vBulletin is MUCH better than PhpBB, for example vBulletin has tons of different modifications/skin, much more than any other Forum Software out there.

vBulletin, I think is more secure than phpBB, phpBB is just freeware really, but vBulletin is paid for, so more work goes into it for security etc, I believe.

phpbb2 was a nightmare when it comes to security, VB is much more secure comparatively. phpbb3 is suppose to be much more secure, till now it seemed to live up to the promise. But for commercial forums VB is the way to go. Even DP runs on VB.

It boils down on how much you are willing to spend. VB has my vote.

If you have the money, vBulletin is the obvious choice. I used to use phpbb for my forum for over a year and then switched to vBulletin and have never looked back.

vb is a bit better on the security aspect. However I' ve used phpBB with succes. I modified it a lot and it worked well. However phpBB is open source freeware that anyone have access to so a lot of people do know how to hack it.

Choose! PHPBB Version 3 because it's free and effective - if you are starting economically then go with PhpBB if you are trying any commercial forum then i prefer VB
