I use ummmmmmm.... Photoshop for editing/adding cool stuff to existing images/photos
And fireworks would be recommended if you actually want to "CREATE" Graphics

I'd say Fireworks.. It's easier to use and as some people have said easier to make templates with.

Both have it's qualities, so I use both. Fireworks for templates, photoshop for picture/image treatment.

I'm definitely in the 'both' camp. I use both of them for designs and both of them for tweaking images. For example, even if I'm prototyping in FW, I may still jump over to PS for some effects work.

    For the most part...
    FIREWORKS BABY!!!!

I agree with the last two comments though, I use both but find myself in fireworks 80% of the time. Prolly more than that, a lot of my projects for the web never see any PS time. I really only use Photoshop for its brush tips and render effects when manipulating single element, like a photo or matte painting layer, and then bring it back into Fireworks. Though I've been using PS for 2 years longer I find Fireworks much easier to work with. Also I love the vector tools in FW, its almost like PS and Illustrator combined.

What ever happened to Adobe ImageReady anyway? I only launched it by mistake a few times but I gather that it was a wanna be Fireworks like Live Motion was to Flash. Anyway....

    Fireworks rocks the muthafreakin house!

though I have been using photoshop for long I doubt its ability when it comes to making simple lines coral draw or even paint brush would do beter with those complex layers and hard to make effects ulead photoimpact or xara is a faster option for graphics users its just that photoshop is too simple to access

Fireworks exports lower file sizes to the web than photoshop.
So for web work think fireworks.

How do you figure that out, in ps you have the ability to export gifs by colour or percentage Jpeg showing file size, what more do you need?

Also its simple to draw lines if you know how to do it:)

I went to an adobe exhibition and the tutors actually tell you to export to the web using fireworks because it is better compression, it's also got a faster slice. I know it's hard to comprehend but when Adobe bought macromedia they bought a very robust compression algorithm, the news is that they plan to integrate this into photoshop soon, the compression software on Flash CS3 is the same window as what is used on fireworks.

I realise 90 of people use photoshop but for web work fireworks truly is the fastest and most responsive interface, it even outputs code. It might be hard for some people to accept but photoshop was not built for web work, but is doing well at trying to integrate tools to cater for this medium.

If you need further advice you can email technical support at Adobe and they will tell you that Fireworks is the best for web. As that is what they are saying at all the roadshows.
