Phone numbers in PPC ads?

I am relatively new to making cpc ads. I've only been doing it for about 6 months so far.

I'd like to know what the general thought is on using phone numbers in PPC ads. It would seem to me that the goal of a PPC ad is to get a click through to a web site, not to receive a phone call. Yet, I do see some PPC ads that use the company phone number for those who want to call.

Does using a phone number stop people from clicking on the ad and make a call instead? If so, is this a good thing or a bad thing. I am guessing it's not really bad, but with PPC ads showing up on many sites, it would be harder to track where the phone call came from as opposed to a web site click which can use analytics programs to track this info.

    Thoughts? Opinions?

I guess it depends on your situation. For a company that sells things over the phone it would be a lot better than a website, and a lot of people prefer to talk to a human over the phone before they consider buying a product.

i use #s in ppc ads for my non-internet company. works great. we use a special 800# just for the ppc ads, so we know when they call via that 800# they either saw the ad. we don't know if they actually clicked through to the site but we don't care as we've already got them on the phone.

I use it with clients that are selling high value stuff. Having a phone company in the ad just makes the whole thing look more legit. In split testing I found that those with usually performed those without as well. I guess it all depends on what you are selling though.
