Petraeus says troop "surge" is working.

General Petraeus told Congress that today that the troops surge is "improving the security situation" in Iraq, but he also stated "the level of civilian deaths is still too high,".

Interestingly, the BBC released results today from an informal Iraqi poll that claims the surge has failed and "about 70% of Iraqis believe security has deteriorated in the area covered by the US military "surge" of the past six months,"

There is a reality that most people subscribe too and then there is a "reality" that Washington subscribes to.

 

You can't blame General Petraeus for saying this... I have worked for lots of companies that force me to tell people they are the best in the field.. why would politics be any different.

Yeah gotta admit Bush played this one well.

All he said was wait for the report then sat back and let it happen. It's a guaranteed win for his administration because all the report had to do was show the slightest bit of positivity. Anything positive and he could latch on to it and say "see it's working, needs more time".

Fact is it would be pretty impossible for adding several thousand more troops to the region to NOT have at least some sort of positive effect. Hell even if it didn't you can always find some way to make it look positive with statistics. Statistics don't lie but they can damn sure tell a different story depending on who's telling it

So yeah in actuality this was the perfect plan to help run out the clock. The democrats didn't realize what had happened until it was too late.
