Pet peeve

    My personal pet peeve with websites is those that play an audio file without my permission. Nothing is guaranteed to make me leave a site faster. I don't mind audio, if it is my choice to hear it. I usually levae my computer speakers on, so I much prefer something like "click here to hear audio". What do other people think?

    It's bloody annoying.

    Luckily, you can disable it in most browsers.

    In IE or Slimbrowser:

    <Tools>
    <Internet Options>
    <Advanced>
    <Play Sounds in Web Pages>

    What about Firefox? I don't usually use IE these days unless I have to (like for programs that don't work with other browsers)

    yup, very annoying, and a whole lot of websites still use it. Maybe we should create a directory of websites with audio, not to visit :)

    Just kidding.... :)

    From recent experience, that would be a big directory

    I once had my speakers on loud cos I'd been listening to some MP3's and later that night visited a clients website, it was a Greek holiday site, and had this awful Greek music on which woke up all the neighbours at 2 in the morning!

    egdcltd,
    I totally agree with you! I leave anysite that plays audio almost immediately since I usually have my speakers on as well. The worst sites are the ones that use flash to play the audio file but and give you no option to stop the audio. Related to that are the sites that continue to use flash intros...what is the point? Flash intros make me leave almost as fast. I don't have time for that stuff.

    I totally agree. I was just saying this to someone the other day. It screams "lame and cheap"

    Maybe I don't visit the right kind of site, but I haven't seen a webpage that plays music in years.

    I surf using TrafficSwarm quite often; tend to get quite a few there. There's one MLM site in particular; can't remember which one though.

    the only thing worse than audio playing on a site is a flash splash page that plays audio! actualy i could be wrong there, at least flash doesn't play those horrible midi files.
