I like it - very simple, and suits the content of the page too. I love the little "specks" in the background, I actually touched my screen to double check it wasn't dust!

 

I think it's a nice and clean layout for your purposes.

Your headline does have a slight typo. Instead of "...where I could occasionally dump bits of content...", it should read: "...where I can occasionally dump bits of content..."

I think you need more of a background and some more design elements added to it. It's too plain as is, use some of those skills to spice it up.

 

I liked the content and the minimal design, it suits the type of visitor that you'll be trying to attract. In my job a a programmer, I'd want a clear site (like yours) that's easy to navigate.
