I was trying to change my permalinks to:

    /%category%/%postname%.html

But now I get a 404 error and lost the pages

Is your blog brand new or did you change the perma links after a ton of blog posts was made? You will have to wait till Google reindex's the new URL's.

Check if your htaccess is properly generated. Also, is your blog on Linux?

You should contact your host first, then post in wordpress forum, there are many experts who will help in your specific problem.I think your main problem is with the .htaccess

    Thanks everyone...

    It's a brand new site.

Made a few pages and then tried to change the permalinks and BAMM!! nothing worked, only landing page.

One issue I had was a tag and a category had the same name and I earsed them and started over.

I erased all pages and posts and started over, and still nothing.

I put it back to default permalinks and it's fine. but once I try this: /%category%/%postname%.html

    Back to 404 errors.

Wordpress I think creates the access file, I don't know enough about one to edit it.

I opened a ticket with my host, but no word yet.

@ankurbharali - your probably correct with going to wordpress forum, but there is some crazy talent here, and was hoping I was just dump and it was something simple.

Hopefull my host will flip a switch and BAMM, it works SEO friendly compared to default...

It ended up being a combo of a few things, htaccess, settings, and a bit of code.

    Thanks for everyones input...
