Hey, after doing a lot of things on the web and building many applications in PHP, I'm curious on moving on. Are there any suggestions on where one might want to start in learning Perl and are there any easier approaches for someone coming with plenty of PHP experience? Thank you.
PHP is too much of a hobby language. Everyone and their brother can code PHP and it's not much of an accomplishment to 'master' a hobby language in my eye.
I think the best resource for perl help has to be http://www.perlmonks.org . The people over there are always really helpful and respond to posts within minutes. There is also a really good mailing list over at perl.com for beginners. http://search.cpan.org is also a must for finding modules.
Yeah.. php is a nice language. But Perl has a soul. Perl is the language for artists and anarchists. "You can only perform great Good if you're also capable of great Evil. Because you can write the most awful programs imaginable in Perl, you can therefore also write programs that are far greater than those of any other language." Other languages are hammers that can hit things and hurt them. Perl is duct tape that fixes things Perl Haiku:
Once you get the hang of Perl, I highly recommend Mason. It embeds Perl inside your HTML. All the convenience of PHP, all the library support of Perl.
Based on my experience, there is little difference between PERL and PHP, maybe %10-%15. Mostly same syntax and language. Peace,
