    Hi All

I am looking for a study or indication of how the search volume for a particular keyword is distributed amongst the organic rankings .....

For instance is keyword x gets 10,000 searches daily, what average percentage can a site expect at position 1,2,3,4 ......9 and 10 ?

    Cheers Marx

nobody really knows this, but google... and SE, and this info isn't published. I would say 1-3 gets 70%

It is hard to estimate the volume of search because different search engine has different market share, if you're looking for Google, few tools may help you to find the search volume, you should use google adword keywords tools/google insights and google trends in combination.

Even if we were talking about a particular search engine, it would be very hard to estimate the percentage of clicks for each rank and have an industry standard.

The link posted in this thread to answer the question did show the segregation but I could verify the source of data used for the analysis. Am I missing something here??

As stated above - I've always understood this number to indicate the approximate number of URLs from which Google was able to find the specified search term.

For competition analysis I would normally focus upon the sites that are returned page #1 for a specific term and then look at their details - content, structure, number of indexed pages, backlinks, anchor text etc.
