    Hey DP,
I have been reading a lot in the ypn forum on dp and have seen a lot of ypn users use the term "niche" for the type of websites they own etc. Since i have recently taken a huge hit due to YPN starting to pay less etc i want to get into these "niche" sites and in order to do this i need to know what a "niche" site is

Call me an idiot or whatever you want but im just asking. I hope someone out here on this forum will tell me what it is and i will become the next web millionaire

    thanks a bunch dp

a niche is a more specific sub-target of a general category. games is a category, pc games is a niche, strategy pc games is a more specific niche... i think you get the idea.

hope that helps makes you a web millionaire.

    I'll try and help.

    Airplane
    Cessna
    Cessna 172
    Cessna 172SP
    Cessna 172SP Tires
    Cessna 172SP Rear Tires

Think about that and tell me which of these are 'niche'.

    from Wikipedia:
Basically, a 'niche' is a small segment of something bigger.. For example.. a website about "cars" would not be considered a niche because the focus is too broad. A website about Ford's might be considered a niche, because it's has a more narrow subject.. A website about "Ford Thunderbirds" would definitely be a 'niche' site, because it's focused on only one thing - T-birds.

I run a niche site, and it does very well (IMHO) - i think it's true, that niche sites have more potential to do better..

    Dang, you guys are fast!

Re; Niche - be careful.. if your niche is TOO narrow, nobody will be looking for the info..

so would a site about buying and selling stocks be a niche?

like a site explaining the stock markets etc (specifially selling short maybe?)

    thanks

I use Adsense way more than YPN, not JUST because the ad inventory for YPN is low, but because it's ad-targeting is retarded. I'm hoping that as Ypn matures, not only will they get a better ad-inventory (that suits MY niche) but i hope their targeting algo gets smarter too.

    Now you're catching on...

I tend to think of a niche site as something like finding a topic that nobody else has a website on. And, this IS possible, but very difficult. I've got several sites that are honestly that unique. But, only one drives home the two important factors: actual traffic and high-paying keywords.

Echo do you mean a unique idea as in anything like youtube etc or do you mean a unique topic like a site on the batteries in sidekick 3's?

Simply put, the extreme is the portal like Yahoo which has everything and anything while the niche is one of the categories in Yahoo which has a narrow specific target market. Actually nowadays, it isn't just niche, it is "micro niche". So the niche may be Lawyers/Legal services while the micro niche is Mesothelioma Lawyers
    :)

what will having a "super niche" instead of a "niche" do for you?

    thanks

niche forums exist because the owner has specialized knowledge regarding that subject. Why bother starting the niche forum if dont have the appropiate knowledge. The last you thing you want is your members to think the admin is an idiot.

    Ask yourself:
    • What kind of people would be interested in a Myspace marketing forum?
    • How many people would come to look at a Myspace marketing forum?
    • Are the people interested in a Myspace marketing forum the type of people that click on ads?

and, are these people that click ads the kind of people that actually buy something from those ads? ypn will look down on you if your clicks dont convert to their specifications.
