I've never had an account with them, but they're definitely stable. One of my friends was with them for years.

 

Back when I used them it was based on a recommendation of a friend.

 

I have been with them for last 3 years, excellent service
very good uptime, rather i rarely get any alerts for website down, whenever i get it is for scheduled maintenance and it is back up in few minutes or an hour maximum, that too once in 3-6 months
Support is very interactive and forthcoming
Billing is very flexible, they give you enough time not that they shut you down the day your bill is due and remains unpaid, and this relationship grows with the more time you have spent with them, during my last renewal of the hosting, i just didn't receive the email and for some reason my CC kept rejecting the auto approval from hostgator, and hostgator kept sending me mail everyday regarding the renewal, but i kept missing it out, ultimately when i found out that renewal is due after almost 15 days since the bill was due, but my site was never down, i assumed it was a good gesture since my account existed with them for almost 2 and half years and they knew i will pay

 

I was convinced to sign up last year mostly because they have been around for such a long time and overall have a great reputation.
