edit - oops the title should have been "peoples unrealistic valuation of domains"

Unrealistic valuations on domains is annoying me today. I'm trying to buy a domain from sedo for a new project, and I'm getting p**sed off with these sellers. I think a lot just post their domains on sedo to get some traffic to them.

Lets say for example the search terms my new site is targetting is is "fruit farm"

Fruitfarm.org and fruitfarm.net are both listed for sale. The .net is available for about $2500. The .org is just listed "for offers". So to start off I offered $1000. The seller responds with he wants $600,000.

He repeteadly asks for $600k and wont budge on this. I asked him to justify the value and this is his response:

"I could earn a living on this domain if I kept it up to date constantly and promoted it well. This is not a domain visitors will easily forget. Therefore I'm not prepared to let it go so easily. "

I think he's short of a few brain cells. There isnt any site on the domain just now. You can earn a living on a brand new domain for $5 if you keep it up to date constantly and promote it well. Why would anyone even begin to think this is a reason to value it so highly?

Fair enough people buy domains and sell them, its a business like any other. Its just very annoying when they are priced like this, theres no way the .org is worth over 200 times the price of the .net. Its a real struggle to find good domains and I hate to see decent ones sitting like this - it will never be used as the seller has a bizarre understanding of the value of it.

    ok rant over :)

They are only worth what someone is willing to pay. I would pay money for established site that makes money but not for domain name with no site.

Why dont you just buy the .net? Or does the .org have some inherent value more than the .net, thus the seller is correct in his valuation that it is more desirable (hence worth more) than the .net. You *can* earn a living off a new domain but new domains generally don't have traffic, are less memorable, etc. As the mantra goes, all the good stuff is taken, and those that have it, know it.

Neither of these domains have traffic, earnings or sites on them. I will buy the .net but I wanted the .org too. There is no reason to value the .org at more than the .net, apart from the .org is pr2 and the .net is pr0. Hardly worth $598,000 more just for pr2, I could get that with $50 of links lol.

LOL...some people are just dreamers on Sedo. I would just go ahead & make an offer on the .net or if you can, approach the .com owner & see how much he/she would sell it for.

In the past ive come across long, 2 sometimes 3 word, bad sounding domains and the seller has been asking 15 million for each, i think on ebay or something in the past. :)

That is taking optimism to the highest heights, lol

    Hi,

If that domain is worth $600000 then you should ask him to pay for the appraisal. Obviously he can afford it. You might also want to look to see if the hyphenated versions are available. I know everyone gets down on hyphenated domains but as far as search engines are concerned I think they're just as good.

There is no hyphenated versions available, everything is gone. I think their is one thing that proves he knows his valuation is rubbish - He owns the .org which he says is worth $600k. The .net is available for only $2500 so why hasnt he bought it? If the .org is worth 600k then surely the .net is too lol.
