what i dont get is when altavista started there were plenty of gr8 domains available, why did they choose altavista - it's alright, but not exactly brilliant.
I got really chocked when I talked with a friend of mine the other day. He said that he had gone back to altavista because he could not find anything with google anymore. I was like "say that again?!?" I dunno, maybe they are trying to do a comeback. Actually I have started getting hits from them this month. For the first time ever.
I never got any hits from altavista, though I have thousands of hits from google, MSN, Yahoo, AOL and even dogpile (what?), baidu and few others ..
I used to use Altavista in the old days too, and didn't realize until Google came along that you could actually get relevant search results from a search engine. I still get some traffic to my site from them, but very little. Does Dogpile still use their results?
Excellent point. I think many of the Google critics today either never knew or have forgotten how dismal search engines were before Google and what a quantum leap forward Google was. That's why they shot to the top so quickly and so solidly.
Just ignore, latehorn, Michael. He isn't even bright enough to be dumb in an amusing way - all he can pull off is "irritating".
I just checked Altavista (first time in about 2 years) and they still suck, compared to Google. Sorry, latehorn.
Too damn right. I remember I used to open up excite, yahoo, infoseek, goto and altavista at the same time in the vague hope of finding what I was after. It's one reason that metacrawler used to be useful
