I can't believe people still use that, my search engine QueryCube.com delivers better results and it only has an index of 2500 lol.
It's google or msn for me. More msn than google nowadays, since google started delivering adsense heavy spam sites at the top of many more specifics searches. Although, altavista isn't all that bad - I still remember it in its prime :) Happy days.

Just checked and I have 87 hits from altavista.com today - about 60% of those are from their random image function, almost all the rest is from their image search.

I loved Altavista. It ruled in its day -- it was like TEH FASTEST SEARCH EVAR when all we had to compare it against was WebCrawler and Excite and Hotbot.

And then Compaq came along and messed it all up. :\

Alta Vista is a great search engine, but is not and will never be as popular as Google. It just doesn't offer any of the services Google has to offer, which may be its downfall to webmasters and visitors.

Alta Vista does deliver targeted, and most of the time in my experiences, better search results more relavent to your search query. :)

Yeah. It was merely the dominant search engine for a good four years before Google even existed. ;)

Can't believe I'm so old. I still remember the day when no one new about google and when you needed to find something online you used altavista and whatever you were looking for, you always saw first porn, viagra and some other spam lol

Okay, but in that case the answer would be a resounding "Yes!". Before Google, Alta Vista was pretty much it, especially after Yahoo started its slide into portal oblivion and paid directory listings. Alta Vista before Google was pretty much the only game in town.

I remember when I joined WebmasterWorld in 2001 I was telling people that Altavista was dead in the water. There we heated debates. I remember the highlight was really that Altavista stopped doing regular updates. I'm assuming it was a result of them getting spammed, and they just weren't able to cope.

"Alta Vista" is very retro......so is "Tuba Playing".....so I guess it does make some kind of sense!.... :)
