Altavista was one of the most expensive domain trades (if I'm right it was the second after business.com) and was the best SE years ago, but now it sucks.. BTW, try to search google for "search" guess which site is first.. LOL
They get their results from yahoo now don't they... seeing as their front page doesn't offer much more than search they probably aren't doing much competing. Oh, and I haven't used their Babelfish in years, I usually go to google for translations now. ...Ah, now I see at the bottom they are owned by Overture.
Altavista, I remeber it was the best Search engine few years ago. I dont use it anymore but i get good 10 visitors to my site every month. err does anyone remember Archie-The search engine? horrible days, werent they?
There actually was/is a Veronica (and Jughead) search in addition to Archie: http://www.synapse.net/radio/veronica.htm http://www.ou.edu/research/electron/internet/veronica.htm http://www.google.com/search?source...s=GGLG,GGLG:2005-35,GGLG:en&q=veronica+search
As with others here posting, I was once in love with Altavista. But they had fallen way behind in indexing the web and google gives my company more respect, so I was gradually weaned. However, they still have the excellent feature of being able to use wildcards in the search, which is highly useful when searching for part numbers and companies you can't spell, so it gets my attention once in a while. It has joined the evil Yahoo empire (evil because they don't give me much traffic), so I don't know what their reason for existance is. I got 300 referrals from Altavista last month, compared with 60,000 from Google. best regards wiz
I just find that short lined columns are easier to read on the screen than long lined columns. but not too short
Well, let me be the first to tell you that you're wrong about that - they're not easier to read - they're just more annoying - a LOT more annoying. I did the same thing
I would agree that altavista had best do something soon to refresh their search results. They do not get the most relevant searches when you use them. I quit using them months ago because of this problem.
