I do have a full time job but everytime im working online mom just thinks I'm wasting my time that I could spend going to the gym, helping her, and doing other unnecessary stuff. Apparently they make more sense than making money online... Oh well..
Well... I don't think helping your mom out when your parents are putting a roof over your head is "unnecessary stuff." Unless of course you plan on paying them rent w/ the money you're earning online. Jenn
Most members of my family do not consider what I do to be a "real job" My inlaws know I do something on the internet, but never ask questions, they just ask if I am going back to work now that my youngest will start school this year.
I had a job as a computer lab monitor at my college where I made $7/hr and I could work and play on the internet as much as I wanted. I might go back to doing that...
It's funny because I make more online than the people that ask me when I'm going to get a 'real' job do at their 'real' job...maybe I should just hire them!
usually people call what I do... "playing on the computer". Unless they figure out an idea of the money I'm making online... then it changes to "Can you come over one day and show me how to do that?" or better yet... "Can you come over one day and set me up with something like that?"
I have another job aswell... But if I can pull enough income off the web, then I wouldn't be opposed to strickly run my online business.
Certain members of my family don't view my job as a "real" job. Luckily, I choose to surround myself with supportive people and try not to pay attention to those who disagree with what I do. I make enough to live on and pay my bills, and I enjoy what I do. I definitely consider that a real job, and I could care less what others think.
Couldn't have put it better. I've got one colleague who goes through the same thing with family, so we have each other as a sounding board when it frustrates us. It helps. And loving what you do is the most important thing there really is. If you can look back on what you did years from now and be proud of it, don't worry about what anyone else thinks of it. I'm sure most entrepreneurs online or off have had to deal with this kind of thing at one point or another. Just look at it as a reason to prove them wrong. Jenn
My mom used to tell me more than often to get a real job, until I shown her my Bank, Paypal and Adsense accounts...
Well said, Jenn! I feel that as long as you genuinely enjoy what you do, what other people think about your work shouldn't matter. If I can get paid doing what I love to do, I am going to milk the opportunity for all it's worth.
The people who complain and rag on you about it are usually the ones who are just jealous, b/c they're stuck in a dead-end job or something they hate anyway.
My reputation generally precedes me with my mates so they know anything I do usually involves making money, even when I said I was getting budgies they said Scott! Budgies! must be money in it Although it is still a common belief amongst some that I get paid every time someone visits. I have been self-employed for 10 years though so I haven't had a real job for a long time, not since I used to line other people's pockets.
I work as a web developer full time and receieve a steady pay check from a company. I also do personal development at home which generates extra cash a month. I have people tell me all the time to get a job because they don't consider sitting behind a desk writing code/desiging graphics a job. Just because it's not manual labor like laying tile for example, doesn't NOT make it a job. In fact, it's a career.
I know what you mean about relatives "your always playing on the pc, you need to get a job" and people who dont agree screw them, thats exactly whats happening to me, some family members telling me im going to fail... total BS imo, no way in hell im giving up because of some negative rtards. Dont listen to what family say, if you got a dream or have a good idea then go for it, you only live once.. For some strange reason some family members just want to hold you back, break free n kick some ass! _Super_Sambrook_
