Hey there everyone. I got a pretty new blog and lately I have found out that after every post I publish there will be about 20-30 people copying my excerpt or the first sencences of my post. Then they publish it on their own blog with a link back to me. While I am really happy that I get a bunch of dofollow backlinks every time I publish a post I am a bit concerned. Will it have a negative effect on my website if my excerpts are copied and published on several other blogs?
Welcome to the internet.... They say if you don't want something copied don't put it online... Unfortunately this is the way of the WWW. Chances are the people copying you have full copied content on THEIR blogs and they are the one's who will get penalised not you.
If they come one sentence or a small summary with a dofollow linkback to you then it will help you in near future... Here is few suggestion for you 1- Use tynt publisher tool. 2- After every-post, ping it and book mark your post so that it got indexed soon by Google. 3- Use feedburner and enable summary burner.. there you can add your link and limit the feed summary. If someone is using your feed then it can give you free backlink .. just learn to optimize it. 4-Place a copyscape logo on your site.. it also helps. 5-Write a content policy at footer of your website. let me know if I can help you in any other way..
LOL they are not copying you, they are posting your RSS feed summary. A friend of mine had a competitor steal a photo off of his site and he called him on it. 1 year later the photo is still there..... with my friend's yard sign right in the middle of it...... LOL
I know that most of them uses auto blogs to post my rss feeds but I have also found some blogs containing random excerpts of my articles. What bothers me is that my excerpts from my articles is the main source of content on my front page. And if that content is found on 400 other websites then Wont my front page get lower value?
Ye, it does not show the full article, only the excerpt. I hope it does not matter that much, it should not since they give me a backlink anyways...
The backlink indicates source. In most cases, if you have a site and another site copies all your articles with backlinks provided, your site will rank higher in the same search terms. When someone takes your content and doesn't backlink, then you could have an issue over who had it first. In those cases, looking into copyright laws and the steps you can take to get a site taken down for infringement can be beneficial. In your case, with someone giving a backlink (regardless of whether it is noFollow) and only using excerpts, you are likely getting benefit and will not be ranked below them for specific search terms. There are many large sites that offer full content copying provided a backlink is given because they know that it helps them and that Google treats the backlink as a sign that you are the originating source. As long as you have your other SEO bases covered, these excerpt users should help you, not hurt you. If you are unhappy with people just copying your content, even when they do give credit in the form of a backlink, make sure that you have a terms page on your site that explains when people can and cannot use your content, "use only with written permission from site owner" might be advisable in your case. When you find someone who is using your content without your permission and you don't want them to, you can take steps to have their site taken down, such as filing a complaint with their web host. Another great way to send a message to an offending party is to find out who their ads are through. You can actually notify their ad company, such as Adsense, that their ads are appearing on a site that has copied your content. Losing their revenue could be a great motivator to stop what they are doing if you ran into a web host that doesn't respect your copyright claims. Beyond that, you can also contact the search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing, to file a copyright infringement claim with them. Each search engine should have a process outlined somewhere on their site that explains how you can go about letting them know that they are crawling a site that is in violation of copyright law.
Sounds like the sites you are taking about are scraper sites that are linking to your site through the feed that you have. It is something that happens all the time and something that you shouldn't be too worried about as many scraper softwares have it built in to note within the coding that they are not the original author of the content.
Don't recommend worrying about this- I would suggest though that when you post something, you ping it / social bookmark it, do whatever you can to get it indexed quickly so that google recognizes you first.
My Rss does only contain the excerpts. However today I noticed that someone has visited my website and copied my whole article and put on his/hers website....
