Pentagon says ships harassed by Iran

Discussion in 'Politics & Religion' started by bogart, Jan 7, 2008.

Iranian boats harassed and provoked three U.S. Navy ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz while in Internation waters.

U.S. forces were on the verge of firing on the Iranian boats in the early Sunday incident, when the boats — believed to be from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's navy — turned and moved away, a Pentagon official said.

Iran's Foreign Ministry said on Monday that the weekend incident was "something normal" and was resolved.

After reading about this from another source (breitbart I think it was), I think the RG of Iran was trying to figure out some of the maneuvers of the US ships, especially after dropping the white boxes in the water...

It's possible the Iranians are planning an attack.

They siezed a small British boat last year and held the crew hostage.

I agree. Infact I think they will use their canoe fleet to actually invade the US and takeover the country

Why does iul try to get involved in threads were she seems to be so ignorant of everything.

Is ignorance bliss as they say?

true, but I think the majority of that situation was just a PR stunt for amadenajihad.

The risk is real. The Iranians could ram a frigate with a suicide speed boat. A frigate really isn't that big.

China has sold high-speed catamaran missile patrol boats to Iran outfitted with anti-ship cruise missiles. Short-range anti-ship missiles for the patrol boats also were sold from China to Iran. The Iraninas are also equiped with Kilo-class submarines.

The Iranians could have been testing US ship reactions.

They dropped boxes.....they made threats on the radio...and then they peeled off.

No harm .....no foul. But not a good sign nevertheless.

They probably were, as earlperal stated above, testing the US and how it reacts. Frankly, if 5 Patrol boats came up to my fleet and made agressive threats I'd blow them out of the water. The US captain kept his cool and did the right thing. Iran loves provoking a reaction doesn't it?

And please no one say Iran would have won the battle, the US destroyer, frigate, and cruiser would have sunk those boats within seconds...

The big threat is the anti-ship cruise missiles. If the Iranians sink a US carrier the US will have no choice but take out Amadenajihad and the Iranian Revolutionary guard.

I don't think Iranians are stupid enough to sink a US ship without provocation. That would be instant suicide.

If the situation was reversed, Iranian boats come 30miles from the US coast, US navy intercepts and threatens them if they come closer (and they would definitively do this), who would be provoking? how does that system of who is provoking who work?

Didn't the Royal Marines get lost and end up in Iranian Waters?
I am obviously no fan of Iran but I must admit I am always a little skeptical when an oil rich nation gets in the press, especially so close to an election.
You never know who to believe

Is this link true incidentally about Euros?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0S_V8jHFKMw

    And this one
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIwlKyz6LvU&feature=related

Put politics aside, and step back.
Suppose you were part of a powerful cartel that owned a lot of oil, that was $20 odd dollars a barrel 5 years ago.
All you need to do is threaten a nation and the oil goes up in value.
I never know whom to believe?
