A domain I want is Pending Deletion.
    It expired September 12th.

    When can I purchase it?
Should I backorder it? How does that work?

You should check to see who has it registered (ie: godaddy)
then you should go to that site a get a back order.
I can not say you will get it, but thats is the best way to get in line.
If more then one back order is placed then you have to bid, bidding can be as low as $100 depending on how many want that domain.

    good luck

It doesnt really matter which registrar was last registrar, but it does matter which company you will be selecting for backordering.

Godaddy, seems to provide the most worst service, since almost all the time I found the domain name to be captured unsuccessfully.

I would prefer other backorder services like snapnames, etc.

Snapnames Back ordering is good if others are bidding on the same name, you get a chance to bid.
If go daddy has the name registered though them and you back order it from go daddy, you can get it sooner then having to wait the full 75 days, I had that happen to me this year, but no one had it back ordered on any other sites.

Can I just wait and purchase it regularly?
It already expired.. when will it be available for purchase again?

Just search the name and add it to your list. If no one is interested on it, you'll only pay the amount on your initial bid

Yes you can. But you have to consider there might be 'someone' who are also eyeing on the domain you want. Better to backorder if you really want that domain!

I'm actually afraid that it will put attention to the domain.
Like is there a list of domains that people are bidding on?
What if it doesn't expire (person reorders it), do I get all my money back?
It's not really a good keyword domain... just a domain that I think is catchy.

Can I check if someone has to backordered already?

Only godaddy will charge you in advance for backorder, and if you don't get the domain name then you won't get your refund instead you would get credit for backordering another domain name. Godaddy backorder is only useful if the domain is already registered with godaddy, otherwise it is waste of money. Other backordering services only charge you when they have already captured the domain name and surely give it to you. Though most of the time, you would have to go through an auction

For me the snapnames gets the name 90% of the time!

The others are to much of a gamble in my opinion if you really want the name.
