Penalty for too much anchor text?!

Is it possible to get penalised for using too much anchor text? We all know anchor text is important, and was wondering whether using too much is a problem? I use article marketing as my primary method for building links which is totally white hat and I do it because I like it, and obviously it builds links, I have also had great success with a lot of my articles appearing over 2000 times in Google results.

Why I ask, is that I have a new site, it was nowhere, optimised it, went to page 10, then dropped off completely.... Although I hear this is normal with a new site?

Obviously now I am cutting back on the articles and using different anchor text now.... But was wondering whether I have hurt my chances are whether vast differences are normal with new sites?!

In my experience, new sites do just that, then they come back in a few weeks. I was led to believe that their is a percentage for anchor text in an article, however I do try to only place 3 of my top keywords in anchor text on any article I post on my blog. If I need to place more anchor texts, I write several articles to accommodate them.

If the site was completely new, it may be in the sandbox now? Be patient and keep building more links.
But do vary the anchor text not to use the same one all the time.
