Hello, can you get penalized by Google for creating to many links within a short time period?

An SEO guy told me that but I'm not sure if there is any truth to it...

Yes, if your website is new, you can get penalized by search engines. A few months ago one of my new websites was penalized because I was writing too many blog comments.

hmmm, ok, so my site is about 2 years old but has barely any links. How do I know how many links I can create?

Slowly and manually building BL is best. I think after the first update or get some PR then start bulk building is good for Google

Slow but sure moves are much recommended by Google rather than being too fast. Boi, be patient enough in waiting for the results of what you have done. It usually takes time. Google will be shocked if you feed them numerous of links.

i was banned due to that.my celebrity blog was getting around 500 visitors - greedy of more traffic i planned to do the so-called seo and finaly got banned.the problem was i was linking from the same site too many times - and i also had reciprocal links .
    my advice is :

    1. get 2-3 links everyday from different sources
    2. try to avoid the same anchor phrase - let the keywords be there
3.avoid steep increase in backlinks - build them steadily

I think you can get banned as google thinks you are linkfarming

Avoid making links with non - thematic links also avoid creating too many link in a single day or week..
Have a less link but with quality websites only.. or related to your themes...

5 good links everyday is perfect to go. Try to get them from different resources like itcoll advised. say, 1-2 from article marketing, 1-2 from blog commenting and 1-2 from directory submissions. It'll work well and Google will reward you for a fair job.

    Cheers!

As I know, Yahoo Answers are no-follow, so the links won't be very valuable.
