Actually it depends if you are careless on opening or saving from/to data without scanning or checking for virus. My first rule on portable storage is scan for virus before opening it and also to make sure if the workstation Ill be inserting on it is also clean so that I wont receive or transfer virus.
Better use USB scanner and antivirus along with the standard antiviruses, which can be runned along with them. It protects your system when you pluggin the USB drive, by blocks all worms and virus even before you just open it and scans itself.
USB antivirus is best. Its automatic detected virus when we pluggin the any USB dirve. but i didn't get any risk when i pluggin USB, first i scan properly then open it.
