It`s because files can be easily written on them, and viruses tend to copy themselves without our knowledge. Nothing that good AV program can not fix, just keep it always on, and don`t forget to scan.

Actually it depends if you are careless on opening or saving from/to data without scanning or checking for virus. My first rule on portable storage is scan for virus before opening it and also to make sure if the workstation Ill be inserting on it is also clean so that I wont receive or transfer virus.

Better use USB scanner and antivirus along with the standard antiviruses, which can be runned along with them.
It protects your system when you pluggin the USB drive, by blocks all worms and virus even before you just open it and scans itself.

because pendrive is just like a hard drive and can be affected by the virus easily like in hard drives. Viruses cannot enter into CD/DVD because they are read only (After 1st burn in most cases).

AS per comparison with DVD/CD, pendrive having more risk for infected by worms and viruses easily because its read and write files. Best to secure your pendrive by installing USB protector or best anti virus software in to your system to avoid this kind of worms directly.

Yes it is true that Pen drive carry more virus so i am giving you some tips to identify the virus.

STEP 1. Open your Computer or Laptop, Click on START then go to RUN then type CMD now check the letter of your pen drive (eg. H

STEP 2. In the command promt now type H: and press ENTER

STEP 3. Now Type dir/w/o/a/p and press ENTER, now you will get list of file. Check this file for "Autorun.inf, new folder.exe, bha.vbs,explore.vbs, info.exe, ravon.exe,ravon.exe, mntdrcore.exe,rvhost.exe or other exe file extention.

STEP 4. If you found any of the above file then run the command [attrib -h -r -s -a*.* ] in comman promt and then press Enter

STEP 5. Now Delete each file one by one using del file name eg. del autorun.inf .

STEP 6. Now scan your pen drive from any anti-virus, Now you will find that your pen drive does't get affected from virus.
