PEACE in Northern Island - but where was the real peacemaker?

I have been watching the historic footage of the peace in Northern Island and the new political future for the province and was struck by the absence of the real instigator of the peace - John Major.

Is it me or has he been forgoten? Whilst Tony Blair is fetted as the peace maker, we have to realise that he has only ever talked to ex-terrorists. It was Major who grasped the political inititive and did the politically unthinkable - talked to the terrorists behind closed doors.

He had the vision to put his and his parties 'necks' on the line and engage in dialogue with parties that had it come out would have meant certain political suicide.

It is 10 years since Tony Bliar took office in the UK, in those 10 years he has in effect been talking and negotiating with ex-terrorists, it was Major who made them ex's yet his part in this historic peace process has in the main been totally ignored.

For your part in the process Mr Major, I for one will be eternally grateful.
