Hi, looking to buying a new laptop for my photography work. Needs to have plenty power for multi tasking and running programs like photoshop and lightroom. Would like screen size between 13.3 and 15.4. Would prefer PC based laptop as this is what i'm used too, but would not rule out MAC. I currently have a Dell XPS M1330 and it is the best laptop i've ever had, but is 3 years old and due for replacement. Your thoughts please...
this debate never ends. I would get the computer that best suits your needs, i.e. runs your programs that you have already bought.
Thanks for your opinions. Will my existing program e.g. Photoshop, Lightroom, Office etc work on Mac or will i have to buy new?
I don't know what version did you buy? For windows or mac? They do not natively run on each others platform, unless you install a virtual machine to run it.
I never hear anyone run PC Photoshop on Mac via Boot camp, Parallels or VMware. But it's possible upgrade from PC Photoshop to Mac version, as long your licence key is valid for cross-platform transfer.
I would generally suggest to choose a Mac, but unless you're able to install there the software you need, stick with a usual laptop.
With all my software being for PC, then i will probably stick with Windows based laptop. Anybody got any suggestions?
I'm a photographer and have always been PC based, with no regrets! Not to say that the Macs are any better or worse, but support is generally more available for PC's in general, there is a wider range of applications and you have to deal with less popular file formats for some non-photographic MAC applications. At the end of the day, you have to decide what suits your own individual needs better.
I have taken on board what everyone has said and think i going to stick with PC, thanks for all the comments...
Though mac is better then pc, I think pc is enough for your work. That's cheaper. The Dell Dimension E520($850) was rated the highest in a recent Consumer Reports.
Everyone saying "Mac is better than PC" with no supporting evidence or reasoning isn't really helping. Yes, Macs are generally considered better for things like video editing and using Photoshop, but they don't utterly stomp PCs. It's a subtle difference, and a lot of it just has to do with what people are comfortable with; designers started using Macs because they were just a lot more streamlined, but now there's not such a solid distinction. However, Mac notebooks are pretty crazy expensive given the performance; for what you spend on a Mac, you could easily get a PC with much higher specs that will run the software you already own and perform on equal footing.
